It's no surprise that everyone, at some point in their lives, prefers to choose a brand name versus a non-brand name item--even I'm guilty of that. Because who wants the cheap version/alternative of whatever item, whether it's clothing, handbags, accessories or makeup when they can get the real thing? No one.
Some people may even argue that paying more for better quality is worth it. But what happens when that's not the case?
People have to keep in mind that a big brand name, sometimes, isn't any better than the cheap version; the cheap version might actually be of better quality than the brand name and, of course, it comes out cheaper.
Take makeup, for example. This year, reality star Kylie Jenner decided to launch her cosmetics line, Kylie Cosmetics, starting her famous "Kylie Jenner Lip Kit." She's experimented with different colors and it's all been good and dandy, until recently.
Jenner decided to bring out a new line in her cosmetics: glosses. They were immediately sold out as soon as they came out, as per usual. But the much anticipated purchased item soon became a nightmare not only to the customers but to Jenner herself.
The Kylie Lip Kit wasn't what was expected because the wand was completely unusable. The wand, like Jeffree's Star's and other customers' wands, was disfigured with no way of being fixed. It was $15, which is much cheaper than her matte liquid lipsticks which are normally $29. Although the unhappy customers aren't going to get a refund, the Kylie Cosmetics' Twitter account confirmed on Sunday afternoon that they would receive a new wand.
So the question really is: do you really need to spend that much money on an item that the owner doesn't make sure it comes out without fault? I'm pretty sure "no" is the answer.
So, instead, you can try ColourPop, an alternative. This website and brand also sell liquid lipsticks and satin lip stains (similar to Jenner's glosses) – which are only $6 – AND other makeup items. So far, all of the reviews of ColourPop are either four and a half stars or have all the five stars.
ColourPop and Kylie Lip Kit both have similar colors and a similar texture, as compared by people that own both. That is why rumors came out at first when Jenner released her cosmetics line: people thought she used ColourPop's formula and colors. But Jenner later addressed that to be not true.
Regardless, this is one of the many cases when the cheap brand version of the item comes out and is better than the expensive version because it has better quality.
So next time you think it's better to buy the expensive version because it'll be better quality, think twice, because like I said, that's not always the case.
