Qualities I Wish People Had In This Generation

People in this generation need to see the world for what it is, not for what it looks like through social media.

Qualities I Wish People Had In This Generation
Felix Russell-Saw

In the past three decades, many things have changed, most of which I wish stayed the same. I truly do feel as though I am a reincarnated soul that is forced to live in the generation where phones, technology and communication alter lives and destroy real relationships everyday. It saddens me to think people in this generation don't know how to exist outside of social media or technology. These are the few, but very important things I wish still existed in today's era.

1. Loving Freely.

What happened to the times where people didn't care about partying, or living the single life of meeting men and women, dating and moving on the next month? What happened to the consistency between two people who love each other; in my beliefs when you have something great you hold on to it. Especially now in this generation where cheating and deceit is so strong. This life is too short to let true, genuine, and childlike love go. I want to go back to the times where chivalry exists and genuinely having your best friend as your significant other was what relationships were about.

2. The little things.

Smell the roses, take a walk on a sunny day, smile to that stranger. I wish people would realize there's more to life than Facebook, recording people fight, who's wearing what clothing and trying to be a size 2. There's obviously a fine line between using social media, being interested in fashion and also being obese, but what I mean is for people to go back outside. As a child, phones weren't the epitome of the generation; going outside and playing video games were. Socializing and interacting with people after classes or even on the weekends is what has made me who I am today.

3. The music.

What are the lyrics these days, I mean seriously. It's all negative about women, drugs and money. Is this what we seriously have come to? What happened to the music from the most amazing artists like Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson. People who made sense of their lyrics, people who spent time and dedication to their careers to spread love, and their inspiration through music. Music is apart of art, language and is embedded into the soul, how can we, as a generation, come from such amazing music such as Bach and Yo-Yo Ma, to Artists like ASAP Rocky and Kanye West, who rap and sing about nonsense. (Most times)

4. Stimulation of the Brain.

Why is it so complex for some young adults and adults to consistently speak into depth about further topics than 'How was your day?'. It's almost as if actual context doesn't exist anymore, wanting to know someone aspirations and their deepest fears are something far in the back of their minds. While people would rather know your favorite color, or what's your favorite cereal, why don't we start delving into more intense topics, or have we just given up on trying to get to know one another? Dive deeper into someone else's mind, it's a phenomenal feeling to feel something someone felt days, weeks even years ago through their stories.

5. The Essence of Life.

We as human beings get so caught up with the day to day struggle of chasing money, people or careers. What happened to living and loving the life you have left, because when you realize you've been running through life to get to that person or that income goal, you've overlooked the beauty of life. So stop stressing the little things that won't matter tomorrow, next month or even next year, you'll end up wasting most of your life on the wrong things.

6. Communication.

Now this is a big one for this generation. People are constantly on their phones now, they call, text, Facebook, Tweet, etc, all to communicate. Instead of getting up, and going to the other person to discuss things or just to walk and talk, now people just text. There are so many things wrong with texting and calling, texts can make an argument worse through misconstrued sentences, it's all impersonal; if you can tell someone the deepest things through a text then it doesn't mean much to you, regardless if you're shy or not confident enough, it's out of respect.

7. Traveling.

I wish people wanted to travel more often. It is very rare to find someone who would travel the world with you, outside of your state, outside of your comfort zone is where you'll discover a new you. I discovered a new me through traveling and I'll never go back to the old me, it makes you see the world for the little things and makes you appreciate everything. See the world, the whole world, don't live your whole life in your comfort zone, you'll die not knowing what you missed, or wishing you could re-do it all over again.

8. Sharing emotions.

Can we stop being so scared of showing emotions? Men, Women, Boys and Girls, we ALL have emotions. It's exactly what makes us human and makes us feel alive, if it weren't for emotions we would be robots. Be more sympathetic, love more, hate less. Why spend your whole life in pain over someone who hurt you? So you can live miserable while they experience life to the max because they let the hurt go a long time ago? Let it go, let the pain, regret, suffering, hurting go! It's not worth it to hurt and mourn over something that happened a long time ago, you'll waste life hurting over someone or something you couldn't control, couldn't change, or couldn't prevent. You are beautiful in every way, let the world see that! Changing the world starts with you.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
