Last night I was laying in bed, about to fall asleep. I was planning out my morning as I usually do, making sure I set my alarm early enough to get in my morning run, breakfast, and dressed before my 9:30 Bio test.
And I started thinking about breakfast.
I am creature of habit, and I’ll usually eat the same thing most mornings. But lately, the dining hall has been having grapefruit.
I’m pretty sure grapefruit is the most controversial of all fruits. You either like it or you hate it. You either think it’s disgustingly bitter or tolerate it with sugar.
I am a grapefruit lover. I eat my grapefruit plain, with no sugar, and I love it. I could eat it all the time.
So on this particular morning, I saw the dining hall did in fact have grapefruit. So, I enjoyed some grapefruit instead of my normal banana. And then, I started thinking about grapefruit.
I would consider myself a morning person, and I often find my brain works best right when I wake up. So, on a random Friday morning, I realized, if I ever wanted to be a fruit, it would be a grapefruit.
At this point, I am probably making little to no sense. But, hang on. I’m trying to bring it full circle.
Since starting to become independent, I’ve realized that it does me no good to be any less of myself in order to please somebody else. There is only one you in this world, only one person that has all the attributes you do. There is only one person that has the ability to make your exact impact on this world.
So, why are we so insist on being and conforming to the standards that society has set out for us? There is no reason, if we are truly going to become our full selves and make a mark on the world.
Now for the grapefruit.
As dumb and elementary as it sounds, grapefruit does not dull itself to make sure other people understand it or like it. Putting sugar on grapefruit is the equivalent of making yourself seem a little different so others understand you and like you more.
There’s already other fruits that taste like grapefruit with sugar. But, there’s definitely no other fruit that tastes like plain grapefruit. It is in its own league, and it is different than any other fruit. And it is perfectly okay with that.
Because there are always people out there that have the appreciation for the taste of grapefruit. You just have to find those people.
The people that truly appreciate who you are will not force you to change. They will instead encourage you to become all that you are in order to make the biggest impact you possibly can.
That’s why I love grapefruit. It is exactly who it is and refuses to apologize. And in my opinion, the world is a lot better because grapefruit is in it.
