In one of my previous articles, I discussed six political events happening in the world in 2018 that would shape America's future. One of the events which I discussed has now transpired. As of March 18, Vladimir Putin has now been re-elected the president of Russia. So what does this mean for the United States?
Most people reading this would be surprised to learn that Russia even holds elections, considering that many Americans believe Russia to be a dictatorship. This belief is not far-fetched, considering that Putin silences any opposition. Some citizens speak out against Putin, but they are jailed or worse. Somehow two opponents prevailed, but between them both they only earned about 16% of the vote. Putin will continue to serve as the president of Russia.
Russia's choice to continue with Vladimir Putin as president is not surprising, considering Western criticism of Putin has only increased his support among his constituents. What is surprising, however, is that Donald Trump was so quick to offer his congratulations to the man and country who so often undermine the American political system. Many representatives of our own government have spoken out against President Trump's congratulatory remarks. It is easy to understand their concern. President Trump's congratulating of Putin sends the entirely wrong message to both our enemies and allies alike.
There have been several instances in which Russia has attempted to undermine the democratic nations of the world, most recently becoming involved in the United States' presidential election of 2016. It seems like common sense to assume that a sitting United States president would not only not congratulate Putin, but condemn the underhanded circumstances in which he won the election. A strong stance on this threat to democracy is necessary. Yet Donald Trump failed to make the adequate response to a threat for yet another time in his presidency.
So what does this mean for the rest of America and the Western world? Russia will continue on as they have and those of us that believe in democracy will continue to support and strive to maintain what is right: a democratic society where each citizen's voice is heard. As long as we stand firm in our ideals as a democratic society, despite our president's lack of action, we will be able to maintain our sovereignty as a nation. Clearly, we cannot rely on our president to stand for these ideals, but we the people must be an example in order to preserve the future of our nation as a major power in the world.
