It's that time of year when we fly from October into November after the calendar hits Halloween and the end of the year goes from 0 to 60 in no time flat. November is the time for family, friends, holiday breaks, holiday shopping and my favorite day of the year, Thanksgiving.
As a college student, I love the idea of going home before final exams, having a massive meal prepared and sitting around the table with my favorite people. It's almost like a day to refuel to keep you going to finish off the rest of the year strong. But with that said, I wish I could do the same thing with my friends at school. So I am. Welcome to Friendsgiving and the steps to make it a bomb one.
1. Don't be the host—you'll get stuck making the turkey
Just kidding, it makes for a good story. But be aware, if you are the host, you're in charge of being the turkey maker!
2. Write out invitations
Because no one does that shit anymore and it's awesome.
3. Make yourself a timeline
Consider the number of people you're inviting and create a legitimate schedule for yourself with boxes to check from the night before to the very second of sitting at the table. Not everything will go as planned, but you'll need a solid one to make it work.
4. Make it a potluck
Everyone should contribute!
5. If you can't cook, bring wine or champagne
Your friends will thank you for not contributing your lack of talent.
6. Potatoes, veggies, casserole, dessert
There should be two of each kind.
7. Stuffing is sort of a pain in the ass. Don't stress about it
People will probably fill up on everything else, but unless someone is an avid stuffing maker that wants to go all out and make a good one, we can pass on this.
8. Phones off
9. Make people actually say what they're thankful for
Whether it's having everyone come up with three funny digs that they're thankful for about the people you're sitting with, or genuine enjoyments of life, don't forget, it's a Friendsgiving Thanksgiving, after all.
10. Make it a sleepover
Because after Friendsgiving, you either ate way too much or those three glasses of champagne went to your head. Snuggle up and pass out, we're all friends here anyway.
Friendsgiving is a time to get the people you love together. The people who won't ask you about your grades, your relationships, call you your brother's/sister's name or rip you a new one for not calling in 3 months. Learn to love it, learn to host it. It's Friendsgiving season.
