Put An End to Rape Culture

Are you comfortable with the way society handles rape? Because you shouldn't be.

“Hey dude, let’s rape some girls tonight!” said some dude at a party.

Okay, seriously? Let’s just think about that. Was it a joke? Was it slang for “getting laid”?

Who knows, but what I do know was that it made me feel uncomfortable. As a 19 year-old college girl, there are a LOT of things that I have to worry about.

I have to worry about:

How many times I say no/ having the ability to say no.

Being alone- anywhere, anytime.

Walking at night.

What I wear.

How much I drink.

Being around “too many” guys.

Men I don’t know.

The “signs” I put out while flirting.

What’s in my drink.

Who hands me my drink.

Any of those examples could be viewed as a “cause” of rape. One in six American women have been the victim of attempted or completed rape. One in thirty three men have been the victim of attempted or completed rape. My first point is that as a collective group of human beings statistics that high should be truly concerning. Both legally and socially we need to be of the mindset that rape is happening quite frequently and with things like the presidential election coming up, topics as important and heavy as rape and how they will be handled needs to be considered. My second point is that beyond decreasing the frequency of rape, we also need to consider how we treat rape.

Of these women raped, how many of them were blamed for their own rape? How many were told, “Well, you drank too much” or “You shouldn’t have worn that skirt”? If a male claims he was raped, he's faced with a whole other category of victim blaming comments, like, "you're a dude, you should have been able to stop it" or "you got laid by a chick, just be happy".

My favorite is the classic “I just don’t believe you, you must be lying to get attention.” That is seriously the society we live in.

It is truly sickening how many times females and males are blamed for their own rape.

Our society seems to have adopted a rape culture mindset, which enables rape by normalizing it through societal attitudes. Examples of rape culture in our society specifically are victim blaming, , rape jokes, the fact that society teaches people to not be raped rather than teaching people not to rape (big difference!!), and justifying rape ("boys will be boys"). There is no cause of rape beyond a rapist.

Rape can never be justified, period.

If we can more clearly define rape and actually have set punishments for this action, perhaps I wouldn’t have to worry about if it were to happen to me, or if it so unfortunately did, who would believe me.

So, in order to destroy this awful attitude, let’s help our girls (and guys) out.

Seriously, take care of people. It can be so easy!

It’s as simple as noticing the girl looking uncomfortable and cornered in a party basement or the girl falling over drunk and the group of guys noticing her. I will end this with a quote meant to inspire us all to end rape culture and help everyone out;

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” (Gandhi).

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
