Where can we find peace? It is not found in our world. Turn on the news, another shooting, another family mourning, another debate, and another election. It is not found in school. In school, you have deadlines and overfilled classes that you needed to be in but aren't. Many of us are not even at peace with our major, much less our daily schedule. What about in our friendships? Are you at peace with that friendship that you realize is not the same anymore? What about that disagreement you had last week? Is it found in our family? Is there a family member you are dreading seeing this holiday season? Or maybe you know your mom or grandmother will be so stressed from preparing the family dinner, that the whole family will experience the stress. What about at work? What about in traffic? Is there any hope for peace? I firmly believe the answer is yes. We just are not looking in the right places.
The Bible mentions peace multiple times: Galatians 5:5, Hebrews 12:4, James 3:18, and Psalms 29:11 to name a few. I am not denying that those are meaningful and important. But if we do not know where peace comes from or how to obtain it, what is the point?
Where does it come from then? The Bible also describes a peace that transcends understanding and that guards our hearts and minds. A peace that is found in Jesus Christ. (Philippians 4:7).
Would that not be nice? To have peace so strong that you cannot describe it or understand it? A peace that guards you and comforts you.
I firmly believe real peace can only come from Jesus. If we want to be at peace, despite the chaos of our world. If we want to be at peace in a world that tells us everything is broken and we will never be enough. If we want to be at peace in the mix of neverending to-do lists and tragedies, we have to turn to Jesus. To do that we need a relationship with Jesus.
Going to church is great. Saying your bedtime prayers are great. But it is not enough without a relationship with Jesus. We need Jesus in the midst of crazy. We need Him. The thing is He wants us too. If you believe in Him, then you believe He died for us. And that means He already pursued us. The relationship has already begun, it's your turn to choose Him.
Friends, let's seek peace and pursue it together. Let's turn toward God instead of toward our busy lives. I believe it will change our lives.
Psalms 34:14. Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.
