Unless you live under a rock, you've probably seen a lot of excitement surrounding America's favorite fall drink: the ubiquitous Pumpkin Spice Latte.
This fall-flavored treat changes people. It takes a seemingly normal person and creates a rabid monster in search of pumpkin patches, sweater weather, and piles of bright leaves to jump into. This is not simple fall enthusiasm, people. This is obsession, fueled by two shots of espresso and entirely way too much sugar.
But here's the real truth: Pumpkin Spice Lattes are not good coffee.
I'll give that a second to sink in.
Pumpkin Spice Lattes, on the hierarchy of coffee, fall toward the bottom. Not only are they sugared to the point where the taste of coffee is masked (which is the whole point of coffee), but the tastes are poorly paired. I love coffee. I love pumpkin. I do not love them together because they do not taste good together.
As an avid coffee enthusiast, I am disappointed year after year by the excitement surrounding the release date of the PSL. Is it because people truly enjoy the taste, or is it just a cultural phenomenon akin to dabbing or Keeping Up with the Kardashians? No one actually enjoys these activities--they only like the aftereffects of being hip with the kids.
While the rest of America gorges themselves on these sugary disappointments, I'll keep my favorite mug filled with coffee that's actually worth drinking.
