The breezy, sunny days of September bring with them a smell in the air that is distinct, signaling the change of seasons. Is it a bonfire, or the hot dogs at the football games? Not quite... it's a scent that smells vaguely of cinnamon and nutmeg and conjures up images of jack-o-lanterns and the iconic Starbucks cup.
Mid-September often signifies the beginning of the release of pumpkin spice products. A display at my local Target has stacks of pumpkin-themed products: pancake mix, coffee grounds, baking chips, and cereals. As the novelty of pumpkin flavoring as increased, you even see marshmallows, tortilla chips, and dog treats. To be honest, my pug is just as basic as I am and really loves fresh pumpkin puree mixed with his dog food.
Most people either fall into one of two categories when it comes to pumpkin spice: a lover or a hater. I am a lover, and often buy everything pumpkin themed during this season. Hey, it's the only time of year I can get my hands on this stuff! And there's nothing more comforting than the warm spices used in pumpkin spice; just as reminiscent of fall as a campfire or watching a football game. Some people who hate pumpkin spice love to boast about their immunity to its spell or their disdain for the barrage of pumpkin products.
Hating something has become just as much as an identity as being a fan. But I don't feel ashamed for loving the flavoring, it's just something that makes me happy!
Summer is my favorite season, so the transition into autumn always makes me feel a little sad. Despite this, my favorite holiday is Halloween and I enjoy the obsession with pumpkins! I'm definitely looking forward to the explosion of pumpkin over the next few months and no matter how outlandish some of it gets, it is still a nostalgic feeling every year when I get to eat something pumpkin.
