Last week, Hurricane Maria struck the US territory of Puerto Rico, causing at least 24 deaths and incurring massive damage that included power losses throughout the entire island. Donald Trump’s response to the horrific devastation has been patently absurd, and communicated for the most part via Twitter, as has come to be the norm.
Trump is making it clear enough that while he has been making some attempts to help the 3.4 million US citizens who have suffered from Maria’s hit on Puerto Rico, his priorities lie elsewhere--such as in harassing the NFL.
Yet the president’s continued incompetence doesn’t mean that Puerto Rico is going to be left (quite literally) in the dark. Without further ado, here are the places currently accepting your donations towards providing relief:
- GlobalGiving
- UNICEF
- United for Puerto Rico
- American Red Cross
- Unidos
- Center for Popular Democracy
- One American Appeal
- All Hands Volunteers
- Catholic Relief Services
- AmeriCares
- Direct Relief
- Save the Children
- GoFundMe has many relief campaigns, both individual and community-based.
- Several sites in New York state are accepting material donations of batteries, flashlights, portable lanterns, diapers, baby wipes, cases of water, and menstruation products.
- Airways is likewise accepting material donations….
- ...As are a number of locations in New York City.
- And finally, spread the word.Share this list the way you used to share chain emails. Dare your friends to all donate a dollar to each of these organizations, and encourage them to spread the links into their own social circles. Differences are made a dollar at a time--and the dollar you give may be just enough to keep a family alive.
