In a celebration of the life of Aretha Franklin, Ariana Grande was groped and sexually harassed.
She was groped by a pastor. She was harassed by a former president. Women today face catcalling in the streets, harassment on social media and harassment in the workplace. Ariana Grande shows us that we aren't even safe at a funeral — a public funeral at that.
During Ariana Grande's performance, former president Bill Clinton was looking at Ariana in a sexual manner the entire time. He was looking her up and down with his mouth wide open and eyes like he was stranded in the middle of the desert and she was water.
It is disgusting.
All the captions for the photos and videos said, "Get you a man that looks at you the way Bill Clinton looks at everyone except his wife."
Really? Are these the goals we aspire to? Is this what we want in a man? Why do we praise this kind of barbaric behavior?
Then things got worse for Ariana. After her performance, the Pastor at the funeral put his arm around her, pulled her close, and groped her. Pastor Charles H. Ellis III later apologized saying, "I don't know; I guess I put my arm around her. Maybe I crossed the border, maybe I was too friendly or familiar, but again, I apologize."
Let's break down this apology.
He starts by saying "I don't know." You don't know? What don't you know? How are you confused? Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people saw you grab Ariana's boob. It happened. You know it happened.
Then he says "I guess" like he wanted to deny that he put his arm around her. Again, it happened and everyone saw it happen.
Then he finishes with "maybe I crossed the border." How does a pastor, a man of God, not know that touching a woman's breast is wrong? Yeah, there might not be a commandment that says "thou shalt not grab a woman's breast without her permission," but that doesn't mean he can get away with it. He also can't get away with this half ass apology.
After Ariana was publicly sexually harassed, SHE WAS BLAMED!
People started saying her dress was too short and she showed too much skin. It is 2018 and we still think that rape victims are to blame. Men still like to think that if a woman wears a short dress, that he has the right to assault her. What about the 1800's and even before then? Women wore long dresses and were always completely covered, and they were still raped. What was the excuse then?
What blows my mind the most is that Ariana is not the only woman to be sexually harassed at a funeral!
This has happened before! A freelance writer, Sophie Saint Thomas, was groped at her own grandmother's funeral. Sophie was mourning the loss of a loved one and in deep pain, and some man grabbed her ass. Then she had to spend the rest of the funeral trying to hide from the man who assaulted her.
We need to stop blaming the victims. The problem is not the women. It was not the short dress or the vulnerable state.
The common denominator here is that men are selfish and sick. They still think that they hold all the power in society and that they have the right to any woman they want.
Ariana and Sophie show us that no matter where we are, if we are a woman, we are not safe from the hands and eyes of men.
