In the wake of this week's events I would be lying if I said that I was at all surprised by the uproar that was caused by a video released by a freshman at the school earlier this week, in my opinion the institution was way more riled up by the content of the video rather than its intent. Morehouse was swift in its action to reprimand the student and get the video taken down but they've failed in several other avenues that I would argue are just as important, maybe they should try applying that same energy to a worthier cause such as their response to sexual assault and improving their title IX team.
It's just disgusting to even think about the fact that they've literally let some of their sexual assault cases sit in limbo without any action for over half a year or longer in anticipation of being able to prolong the perpetrators from being held accountable for their actions. This speaks as a testament to how much worth they place on keeping their campus and its occupants safe in comparison to the regard that they have over their reputation. If we're being serious Morehouse is like the P. Diddy of the Atlanta University Center, their sole and primary concern is self satisfaction and they'll do anything to protect their image and cover their assess at the expense of the best interest of their students.
Morehouse has this ingrained belief that if they ignore the issue of addressing the problem that exists between respecting sexuality and truly teaching their students what is means to maintain your masculinity then the problem does not exist.
Sometimes our biggest messages aren't the ones that we blatantly say but instead what we don't say. In terms of minority groups Blacks are one of many minority groups whose lives are continually being put at risk by several different entities that oppose us for unjust causes. HBCU's are given the task of teaching its student body to value themselves in its instruction both in and out of the classroom especially in a community where the world is constantly making us question our significance or belonging in the world.
Instead of consistently committing blunders Morehouse should avoid sending out emails, letters, and statements that allow them to remain politically correct without actually taking any action. If we never critique the institutions we love they'll remain stagnant and lack effectiveness for a long time to come.
