Within my three years studying psychology at Mississippi State University, I have discovered an undying affection for the study of relationships and sex. So, I thought I would share some of my favorite psychology facts, theories, and phenomena regarding my favorite topic.

Four psychological facts, theories, and phenomena regarding intimate relationships:

1. Dates that get the heart pumping, will probably make your date like you more.

Pay attention if you are planning a date anytime soon, this comes in handy. Misattribution Of Arousal is the idea that people tend to mistake the source of their arousal. So, let's say you go on a date to an amusement park. It is possible that the fear or excitement felt on those crazy roller coaster rides will actually get your partner to like you more. Your date could mistake that excitement felt on the roller coaster for excitement felt because, oh my gosh, my date is just so awesome it is making my heart flutter. Cool, right?

2. Frequent sex has been associated with better health.

So, most people know that sex burns calories, but did you know that increased sexual activity has actually be linked to better functionality within the brain? Frequent sex has also been credited with improved psychological health as well. It has even been suggested that an orgasm is the perfect cure for many physiological problems, such as headaches. So.. ya know... bowchickawowwow.

3. Is it me, or do they keep getting prettier?

The Mere Exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon suggesting the more you see someone, the more you'll like them, or the more they'll like you, whichever way you prefer. People tend to like things they know, so the more someone is exposed to another person, the more likely they are to end up liking them. This works with attraction too. The more you see someone, the more attractive they become to you, or the more attractive you become to them. If you have a crush on someone in your class, sit next to them in class and go to class everyday. (If you are in college I apologize for writing the statement you have heard 5000 times).

4. Red is sexy.

In a plethora of research studies, it has been found that straight men report being more attracted to a women in red. There's many different explanations floating around regarding this theory. Some have suggested that is an evolutionary development, others believe men have simply been programmed to believe that red is sexy. Either way, ladies (or men) , if you have a man you are trying to impress, I suggest rocking that red lipstick, dress, or shoes.

Science can be fun, if you know how to use it. This has been a PSA from your friendly, neighborhood psychology nerd. Have fun, you crazy kids.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
