Psalm 139:13-15
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
When I was made in the secret place,
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth.”
This summer, I talked with a younger peer who reached out to me from my alma mater. Her words to me were, “I wake up at 5 am before school every morning to do my makeup and hair and put on a half-decent outfit for people I’ll probably never see again in two years and I honestly forget about my own comfort and self-love because teenagers are so focused on what everyone else thinks of themselves, me included."
In today’s society, we as human beings get caught in a vicious cycle of self-loathing and we romanticize behavior that encourages us to put ourselves down. We become obsessed with our outward appearance and how others view us, almost to an unhealthy extent. We stand in front of mirrors and pick out flaws on the canvas that is our collective bodies, criticizing every little detail, from the our physique to the size of our nose.
Let me stress how selfish this really is.
Take a moment and imagine a time you really put your entire being into creating something. Whether that be a drawing, painting, sculpture, essay, performance, or whatever you may be passionate about. That masterpiece you’ve created means the world to you, and it is your pride and joy. But imagine someone taking a look at it and criticizing it, picking it apart piece by piece and voicing how incredibly dumb you must be for creating it. You would probably feel heartbroken, right?
Now, take that image of your work of art, and put yourself there. You are the masterpiece, and the artist is none other than God. He took you to a secret place, where no other heavenly creature could see Him in progress, and He made you in His image, perfecting each unique aspect that you may think is imperfect and flawed. Those flaws were created in a beautiful and wonderful way that we cannot even begin to comprehend. Each freckle upon your cheek was placed there with purpose, just as the stars in the sky. The shape of your body as carved out with intention of beauty, and each stand of hair was woven in grace.
God’s character goes into the creation of every person, and we should have as much love and respect for ourselves as the Maker has for us. When you feel worthless or less than wonderful, remember that God’s Spirit is willing to work within you. His understanding has no limit, and therefore He understands us perfectly, for He is the Artist, and we are His masterpiece.
For His Sake,
Kait.
