We are in an age where electronic dating and dating apps are a thing. Yes, I use them. Can we agree that there needs to be a code of conduct for these things? This article is a public service announcement to the male users of these apps, because, simply: you're doing it wrong. Consider this your wake up call!
Below are some of the most common mistakes I've seen in my use experience. Let's take a minute to evaluate.
*All below examples are real (sadly), and from my personal account on Plenty of Fish.
1. Your Profile Picture/Screen Name
This is literally the electronic first impression, like a digital handshake. So, guys, you tell me how am I supposed to feel about you when I see this? I've heard of a guy "peacocking" in order to get a girls attention, but literally?
Sorry, Matt, 27, from Downers Grove, IL, but this photo makes question which one of you actually has the nuts.
This guy's screen name was "TenderTiger," which gives you an idea of what to expect, but still.
Oh yes, TenderTiger... I get you. Gotta love those kitty cats.
But in all seriousness, can you have goofy pics that show your personality? Of course, but make sure the picture you choose also conveys the same message you're trying to say about yourself through the app itself.
2. Don't Be an RMO (Repeat Message Offender)
Just like in real life, if a girl expresses she's not interested, do you keep going up to her and try to get her attention? No. Why? Because that is creepy. The same goes for the Internet. Does it suck when this person you finally get the nerve to talk to doesn't express interest in wanting to get to know you too? Of course. But the fact is, being pushy isn't helping your case at all. Take a hint, dudegoodtime.
Now we know why you've been single 57 months.
3. DON'T BE CREEPY
What NOTto say.
Umm, no.
4. Always Spell Check Before Pressing Send
Sorry Jon2860, I don't think you totally mean what you said.
Take this as a gentle lesson learned, guys. Accept that there are rules of conduct when going about socializing over the internet.
