Being a college student there is constant pressure from every end of the spectrum. First and foremost, we worry about our academics. It seems like there are never-ending deadlines, project after project, assignments, essays, and of course exams.
At this point, finals season has fallen upon us, and one semester feels as though it has passed within the span of a week! Some of us face other sources of stress, in social life, finances, romantic life, parents, and so many other details.
The double-edged sword of the independence we are given is that our lives and success are built upon how we perform under the stress. No other human being is responsible for the actions we take to do well in school, all while balancing becoming an independent adult. Some days are really difficult to forge on and get the work done, especially when the busiest time in college is facing us down.
Personally, I have been so overwhelmed that refusing to do all work and laying in bed seems like the best option. I wouldn’t take care of myself, made any sacrifice to complete my work, and then I was emotional, mentally, and physically exhausted. The pressure I placed on myself was unhealthy and barred me from working at my full potential.
I then came across a phenomenon called practicing self-compassion. There are very spiritual ways to practice it, and it can become very intense. But in the simplest form, it is just changing how we talk to ourselves. In the midst of peak stress, I could feel the negativity oozing from my being. At times, everything would break me down. The way people acted, brief interactions, school work, my professors.
This was counterproductive to what I needed to achieve, as I could barely work through my own stress to persevere. In self-compassion there is positivity, it is having a strong mind to work through the day’s difficulties.
Firstly, it is important to feel confident in yourself. Maybe telling yourself that you wouldn’t be on this path unless you can succeed to the end. Different thoughts like this are very helpful. Even just saying “I like myself” is an incredible first step. In finding positivity and confidence, I want to do work, I want to feel passionate, and I want to succeed.
Another aspect of self-compassion is in the physical realm. Participating in activities that make you happy and are relaxing, without going overboard and losing a productive mindset. Meditation and yoga are two relaxing methods that can be combined with improving self-talk.
However, this may be a lot for some people. It can be as simple as watching your favorite TV show. Set a certain amount of time aside to allow your mind and soul to relax, keeping in mind that you have to write that essay after. Physical activity can be very helpful as well, my personal favorite is hiking.
Everyone has different interests and ways of coping with stress, but practicing healthy methods will provide for a healthier mindset and life. There are also many resources on campus if you are having difficulty dealing with stress at this time. With this, there are also so many beautiful places to relax and recharge on campus. My personal favorite is the serene Durfee Conservatory.
With finals among us I wish you all the best of luck! Study hard, and keep in mind to have some self-compassion. Remember, you will succeed, you are incredible, and put your most positive mindset forward!
