I am basically my mom according to a lot of people. Our baby pictures are more or less identical. We both hate feet and love reading. We despise cleaning, but we love the feeling of having a clean space. We know nothing beats a good ol' square of Dove Special Dark chocolate when the day has been rough.
I used to get annoyed when people compared me to my mom (we shall blame that on teenage hormones), but being in college and away from the family has only made me realize how cool my mamma is. It's also made me realize I am much more like her than I thought. Here's why I take it as a compliment when people compare me to my mom:
1). She Is A Great Cook
For real. Amazing. Phenomenal. I aspire to one day cook like my mother.
2). She Has an Amazing Work Ethic
She says she's going to do something, and she does it. If only I could have that work ethic when I'm doing homework...
3). She's Self-Sacrificing
My mother is one of the most self-sacrificing people I know. I can only wonder how many times she gave up something for us kids. I hope that in a few years when I start having kids I can follow her example.
4). She Wants the Best For Everyone Around Her
I knew from a young age that I wanted to go to college, mainly because she has encouraged me to grow and be my best. Maybe reading to me and going through a stack of books twice in one night every night had something to do with my current Communications major.
5). She Listens
She lets me talk through my problems. Even if they are problems I made up in my head.
6). She's Not Perfect
She will be the first one to admit that, but that's the beauty of it. She knows she isn't perfect, but she rocks it. Kinda amazing.
7). She Loves Jesus
In my opinion, there is nothing better a child can see their parent do than reading their bible and praying.
8). She's Did Not Let Me Have Everything I Wanted
The result of this is I am not too spoiled. Of course, she and my dad took care of our needs and gave us treats, but demands did not fly.
So, to all the moms out there: you are awesome. Your kids might not appreciate you now, but they will. It might take them until college or longer. Know that you are making a difference in your kids' lives. Remember you are amazing.
Kids, remember your moms. They may set rules you do not like. However, they more than likely just want the best for you. Show your moms some love this holiday season, especially if you are away from home. They miss you.
Mom, I love you. I'm sorry I don't say it or recognize it enough. You inspire me. I thank God that he entrusted you and Dad with raising me, because, in my humble opinion, you have done a wonderful job.
