This week my wonderful, beautiful home city of Philadelphia hosted the DNC. Though when it started there was some scandal and distrust, I believe the city did a great job of controlling the protests and chaos. What really made me happy was the fact that here, in a city that has its own great history, nominate the first woman to become president!
As a proud feminist, I can't believe that this is happening in my lifetime. To see how far we have come I use the example of a woman at the DNC who is in her 90s. She was born in 1920, a time when women still did not have the right to vote. Last week she casted her ballot to nominate Secretary Clinton. In her lifetime she went from not having a basic democratic right to nominating a woman to hold the highest office in the land.
The dream of being President isn't just something little girls parents tell them to remind them that they can be anything they want, she showed those girls. It showed me that I have the ability to go has far as any man.
To say that all women's rights will be fixed now is naive. There really is so much that needs to be fixed. The issue of sexual assault, matters of church, equal pay and family leave are just some, but maybe now more light will be shinned on these issues and something will be done about them.
She isn't perfect, not by a long shot. She has made many, many mistakes in her long career, but who hasn't. She keeps pushing forward and trying to make change. Her ideas and views on things change as the times change. That is a person who looks at what is happening in the world and says, "Maybe I should think about the future." She doesn't stay stagnate in her views, and I commend her for that.
Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, you must admit that this history being made. You must acknowledge the huge step being made in our country. In the past three elections a black man and a women have ran for President of the greatest nation in the world. Despite the politics that makes me proud to be an American and it should make you proud too.
This election is very important for our country. So many different issues are at hand, as is our national security. The past 44 presidents have had their shot to make the world better and some really made an impact, but it is time to turn the Oval over to a woman. America needs a woman's touch.
I have never been more proud to be a woman in America.
