Proud To Be D3

Why I love being a Division 3 athlete

102
Proud To Be D3

A lot of people ask me why I bothered to play a sport in college for a Division III school. They think that it's a waste of time. "You aren't compensated, so why do you play?" "Why would you waste time on sports that you could put into your studies?" Many people just don't understand, and I get it. It's hard to grasp why a person would dedicate so much time and energy into something that doesn't obviously benefit them. So why do I play a D3 sport? It's because I love it.

Division III sports are for the athletes that couldn't bear to part with the game. It's for the ones who have an intense passion; a drive so strong that even thinking about not playing their sport makes them sick to their stomach. No, we don't receive athletic scholarships. We don't get paid to show up and take time out of our busy class schedules to train and watch game film and get better-- but we do it anyways. Our love for the game is so strong that it doesn't matter that there isn't any monetary compensation, just the chance to play at the college level is enough.

We aren't the popular college teams that people across the nation will recognize. The name on the front of our jerseys may not be widely known, but I am just as proud to wear my jersey as any other athlete on this planet. I will wear my jersey with pride until I graduate. I know that for me, it all most likely ends after these four years. There will be no more bus rides with teammates, training sessions so hard that you're shirt is soaked and dripping with sweat. No more strategy meetings or team dinners. After my four years here, there will probably be no more serious competitive play for me. I know this. I dread it. If I could go on playing my sport forever I would, but it just isn't realistic for me. There are a lot of other things that I want to do with my life, but for now, those things can wait. I love my sport so much that I'm willing to take the time out of my life right here, right now, to enjoy it.

I'm not saying that D3 athletes are any better than any other athletes playing in other college divisions. Anyone dedicated enough to play a sport in college has an incredible passion for their game, and I have huge respect for them; just don't gloss over and ignore us athletes playing Division III sports. We work hard and we sacrifice just as much as any other athlete at this level of play. I've met some of the most passionate athletes in this division, and I've watched and played with some incredibly gifted teammates as well. We may not get the recognition that the other divisions might get, but we athletes in Division III schools should not be overlooked.

It's not a waste of time when you love what you're doing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
