Why I Am Proud To Be A Cardinal During The Week Of BOV
Rachel Stockwell

With a few weeks left of the semester, it is finally the time of the year for the most anticipated event, the Battle of the Valleys against Grand Valley State University.

For over 10 years, SVSU and GVSU have been spending the week before the annual football game fundraising money for charities of their choice to see who will come out on top, which not to brag, has been Saginaw consecutively for 14 years.

Not only have students and faculty at SVSU have been putting on and participating in countless events raising money for our charity of choice, they have also been waiting for the day where they can triumph over the Lakers.

In spirit of the BOV, here are just a few reasons why I am proud to be a Cardinal this week:

1. We Participate

From the Kickoff Party in the TSAR Monday night, to the actual football game against GV on Saturday, there are constant events going on across campus to get everyone excited and pumped up for the game. Because of this, no matter the event, Cardinals flock together to have a good time and show off the pride that makes us who we are.

2. We Make A Difference

One of things that make me the most proud to be a cardinal this is week is the fact that cardinals from all over campus make the decision to donate to a charity that is making a difference in the world. The charity that SVSU is donating money to this year is called the Hidden Harvest, which is a local organization that provides surplus food to agencies that then give it to families that do not have enough in the Saginaw, Midland, and Bay region. Not only is it a great cause, but it also brings a sense of unity to our community that any student can feel as they walk around campus and see everything from Louie the Laker behind bars or even the fellow classmates bidding to win some pretty cool prizes outside the Marketplace.

3. We Compete

Although Saginaw Valley has not have had the best luck when it comes to the annual football game against the Lakers, it does not stop the Cardinals from getting out there and supporting their team. From the tailgate, to the last second of the game, Cardinal Pride floods the school just hoping that just maybe it will be the year that we beat are undefeated rivalry. Our Red Pride does not fall flat, rain or shine, which is one of my favorite things about being a Cardinal.

4. We Connect

Because of all the events that Saginaw Valley puts on during the week, Cardinals connect in a way that would not be possible other wise. During the week of festivities, students come together and support something much bigger then themselves, making Saginaw Valley one of the best universities out there.

5. We Soar, Not Sink

Let us face it; being a Cardinal instead of a Laker this week is just another reason to be proud.

So Cardinals, lets get out there, have fun, and show Grand Valley State University who the real better valley is.

Let’s go, Cards!

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
