"Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified." -1 Corinthians 9:26-27
In the text above, Apostle Paul uses the analogy of exercise and of an athlete to bring out some spiritual trues. He uses this analogy of running and athleticism to explain how he pursues his spiritual life and call into the ministry to others. On the other hand, my main focus is on the (a) clause. Paul said "I do not run aimlessly." Although Paul was referring to spirituality in this passage, everything he said describes a great runner and athlete. During the summer of 2014 and 2015, I did a lot of running. Some where down the line I lost a hold of it. Why did I allow that to happen? A few months ago, I decided to start back chasing the benefits of running. I do a lot of exercises, but running is the most important one to me. It sets the tone for every other exercise during a workout session. Below are a few benefits of running:
1. Running is good for your heart
I believe that running is the best kind of cardio. I run 15 to 20 minutes 5 days a week. Running reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
2. Running is a real high
While running, your brain pumps out two powerful feel good chemicals, endorphin and endocannabinoids.
3. Running Strengthens Your Joints
4. Running burns a lot of calories
This is one of my favorite benefits of running. Burning calories keeps you at a steady weight. Some of us take in more calories per day than what we actually burn.
5. Running is a great leg workout
When a person is running, his or her legs are pounding on the treadmill, concrete, grass, floor, or whatever they're running on top of. That constant collision against the surface burns, but that burning and soreness is what strengthens a person's legs.
6. Running works your core
If a person's core isn't strong then he or she isn't that strong. A strong core is like the foundation for everything else. A strong core leads to better athletic performances. It also improves posture, balance, and alleviates back pain.
7. Running is a stress reliever
After an intense day of work and school, I like to hit the gym and sweat. Running and other exercises clears my mind.
If you can't run then walk. Do anything that is possible to protect your health.
