5 Things We Need To Do In Order To Protect Ourselves When The Unthinkable Happens

We live in a world where anything is possible at any given moment. When you put yourself out in the public, you're putting yourself at risk. There could be a terrorist attack. There could be an active shooter. You could be kidnapped. You could be beaten. You could be sex trafficked and the list of terrible things goes on. Some people like to ignore these possibilities because it's too hard to fathom the thought of it ever happening to them. These are the people who are the least prepared and most vulnerable. The best thing you can do for yourself is come to terms that these are possibilities and get educated on how to protect yourself if the unthinkable does happen. Here are a few ways to do so:

1. Take a self defense class

It's important to know how to fight off a predator or how to get away from one. Taking a self defense class will make you more confident and able to protect yourself with your own two hands.

2. Get your conceal carry

Familiarize yourself with gun laws in your state and then educate yourself on firearms and how to use one. I think this is a skill that everyone should know how to do. Someone could come into your home with a gun at any given moment and you want to be prepared.

3. Buy a firearm

Whether it is to conceal carry or open carry or to just have in your home. This is the best form of protection not just for yourself but for others around you. Practice with the firearm of your choice and get comfortable with it. You don't have to be a great shot, you just have to be able to hit the target.

4. Never walk alone at night

kidnap

This is especially important for women. Don't make yourself a target. Make your friends walk you to your car or home and do the same for them. If for some reason you do have to walk alone somewhere, talk on the phone with someone the whole time. At least that way the person can make sure you get from point A to point B safely.

5. Be aware of your surroundings

This is the best advice I can give someone. Make sure you know where all of the exits are in a building. Don't just go strutting out into the parking lot. Look for suspicious vehicles or shady people. Don't walk close to vehicles because someone could easily grab you. Just be mindful before you put yourself in a situation. Something can happen in a matter of seconds.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
