Being an English major has its ups and downs. Being an English major gives you an idea of how difficult it must be for authors to finish a novel, let alone a brilliant one. Sometimes, it's great, but other times...not so much. It has its perks, but there's also a downside. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, but it isn't constant stormy weather either.
There are many Pros to being an English major which include:
- Having a degree that lets you get a career in the English field.
- Being able to become a professional writer (author)
- You have the sudden urge to correct other people's grammar ALL THE TIME
- Expanding your writing skills
- Making friends with other English majors
- You can get As on all of your papers in college
- Non-English majors will ask you to look over their papers for grammatical and/or errors
Although, there are many cons as well including:
- "You're majoring in English? So you want to be a teacher?"
- Nobody thinks you'll be able to get a job after college
- "You won't be able to be successful with a degree in English"
- You have the sudden urge to correct other people's grammar ALL THE TIME
- You are just plain awful at other subjects
- "You can't do much with an English degree. That's why English majors read so many books. That's all they ever do."
- You will question yourself a million times when Microsoft word tells you if you made a mistake in your writing.
All in all, being and English major is awesome and you can get a lot of use out of a degree in it. There might be some cons along with all the pros, but that's why it's the phrase "pros and cons". You can't have one without the other. If you remember all of the good things about being an English major, then the bad things don't matter. Just remember the most important thing, you are a strong independent English major and you don't need any math.
