We made it. We have made it through the entire school year with most likely some minor fails. Hopefully, the number of fails you have encountered outweigh all the fun you had this year! Whether we like it or not summer is coming an and we will be leaving our old Kentucky home. After a full year, I can accurately say that I know this school like the back of my hand. Summer is fast approaching, so I will break down the positives and negatives of heading home for summer.
Things I will miss:Â
1. William T. Young Library
Visiting the library and meeting people to hang out is easily one of my favorite parts about freshman year. Now let's be clear, I definitely will not miss studying this summer. The main reason that Willy T. has some significance for me is the crazy amount of hours I have spent their not studying. Also, not being less than a five-minute walk to a Starbucks will also take some adjusting to this summer.
2. Greek life
Joining a Greek life organization helped me become more connected on campus and I have been fortunate to make some life long friends through these organizations. I will miss being able to call on my fraternity brothers at times when I am in need or if I just want waste some time with my closest friends.
3. College sports
The excitement of being on campus for a full year of Kentucky sports has been something I had been looking forward to for a long time. It definitely did not disappoint. I mean, an Elite Eight men's basketball team and one of the most winningest years in Kentucky football history has me ready for round two during my sophomore year.
Things I won't miss:
1. 8 a.m. classes
Having an 8 a.m. class three times a week was one of the worst decisions that I made during my freshman year. I am traditionally a big morning person and I enjoy having my morning coffee, but classes that early in the morning don't exactly provide the best atmosphere of learning for college students. I won't miss my early math class, where no one asked any questions and people looked like they had just rolled out of bed.
2. Parking in K-lot
One of the parking lots, known as K- lot, is a logistics nightmare. We have to move our cars every weekend in the fall, which leaves some student with no spots on campus to park if they move their car last minute. Walking from K-lot or waiting for the bus is always very unpredictable because I never know if I need to park near the bus stop or park as close to my dorm as I can get. There is never a time when I can reliably get back to my dorm from K-lot. I won't miss budgeting extra time to wait on the bus to go drive my car.
3. The 90 and Champions Kitchen
I remember when I took my first tour of the University of Kentucky and eating lunch with my parents at the dining hall known as The 90. The excitement that I had about the food options on campus before college were grossly overestimated in my mind. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful that I am able to go and get food anytime I need it, but having the same meal of chicken nuggets and powder eggs really just gets old.
