2017 seems to be another record year for Hamilton. The American musical following the life of Alexander Hamilton continues to be the hottest ticket in the theatre world, with sold out shows in New York, Chicago, the West End, and on its national tour. The show's original cast recording was just certified Triple Platinum this month, and Lin Manuel-Miranda, the creator of the show (aka everyone's favorite human being), confirmed that a Hamilton movie is in the works. Book-wise, Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton and Hamilton: The Revolution, the book all about the musical, are consistently on the New York Times Best Sellers list each week. The pop culture phenomenon will continue to expand its presence in the literary world, with more Hamilton-inspired books coming out this year. As a huge Hamilton fan myself, I'm excited yet nervous about these releases.
Pro: More Hamilton!
Imagine reading 499 Facts about Hip-Hop Hamilton and the Rest of America's Founding Fathers by Stephen Spignesi while listening to Hamilton! It's the meta we've all been waiting for!
Con: The books may take hype away from the musical
Obviously, everyone in the world isn't going to love Hamilton. While the books will commemorate Alexander Hamilton's life and not the musical, I feel like outsiders are going to automatically associate the books with Hamilton. I can already imagine people looking at Alexander Hamilton's Guide to Lifeby Jeff Wilser, and saying,"Ugh, just another advertising and marketing tool for that show."
Pro: Some go more in-depth about Eliza Schuyler-Hamilton
While I absolutely love her presence in Hamilton, I wish we had more Eliza in the show. That being said, I'm so excited for her to come more to life in these books. Melissa de la Cruz's young-adult novel Alex and Eliza will tell the story of the night Eliza met her Alexander. I, Eliza Hamilton by Susan Holloway Scott is an adult-fiction novel written from the perspective of Eliza herself.
Con: How much will they romanticize Eliza and Alexander's relationship?
While reading the synopsis of each novel, I'm beginning to question how the couple's relationship will be depicted in Alex and Eliza, I, Eliza Hamilton and Elizabeth Cobbs' The Hamilton Affair. While most of the authors have stated how much research they've put into the books, I'm nervous about how well Eliza's story will be displayed on the pages.
Pro: Many of these books are written by very reputable & successful authors
Many of the authors are forces not to be reckoned with in their fields. Published in 2016, Alexander Hamilton: The Illustrated Biography was written by Richard Sylla, a Hamilton scholar and a chairman of the Museum of American Finance. Melissa de la Cruz is one of the biggest authors in the children and young adult-fiction landscape, having written The Descendantsseries and the Blue Bloods series. And Susan Holloway Scott's I, Eliza Hamilton definitely isn't her first novel in the historical genre. The author has written over fifty historical novels and historical romances.
