Probably one sentence I hear very often around the holidays is, "Oh, wow! The 22nd? Your birthday is so close to Christmas!" That it is indeed, and I must say I don't hate it as much as you think I would. I actually enjoy having my birthday so close to the cheery, Christmas season. Despite my positivity, there are some ups and downs to having your birthday near that time of the year, and this is just a few of them. Enjoy!

1. Pro - You can do something Christmas related for your very own birthday

Sledding, ice skating, caroling, hot coco, shopping, etc. Who wouldn't love a beautiful walk in the snow surrounded by Christmas lights, AND it's your birthday too? Score!

2. Con - Combined Christmas and Birthday Gifts

Now, fortunately, my family has been extremely good at avoiding this type of situation. But I have heard many instances from others who get gifts just on Christmas, and their parents will count the gifts as their birthday presents too.

3. Pro - You can wear ugly sweaters, and listen to Christmas music on your birthday without being judged

Only December babies can experience the joy of jamming to jingle bells on their special day.

4. Con - Too much celebration

With all the Christmas parties and birthday bashes, you might get sick of the endless cake and cookies (and socializing).

5. Pro - Late December birthdays are usually off from school, or sometimes you get a snow day

No need for wasting your birthday in class, instead you can enjoy your break!

6. Con - You could possibly get stuck in the car all day

Avoiding Christmas traveling is near impossible with your birthday being so close to the 25th, but at least after being in the car all day, your destination is your family!

7. Pro - Everywhere you go is gorgeous and festive

It's almost like all the neighbors decorated their houses just for your birthday.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday to all the December birthdays out there!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
