When you go on a typical vacation, there are usually things you love and things you absolutely loathe. It's human nature to take any situation and weigh the pros and cons. Last year, I went on a week-long RV trip with my family. Throughout the week, I made a mental checklist of what I liked and didn't like about every element. That does not say it wasn't fun, in fact, it was awesome. Having said that, I think it's fun to make fun of my own vacation.
Pro: Riding in an RV
When you're riding around in an RV, especially for the first time, it's hard not to become completely enamored with it. Seeing the countryside as you drive, having the space to do whatever you want or sit wherever you want, etc. It's very rare that you get to experience something as peaceful as RV driving. With regular driving, you're always in a rush or trying to get somewhere. When you're in an RV, you feel liberated and it's awesome.
Con: Packing and Unpacking
Imagine moving in and out of a house every other day. That's what going on a road trip is like. It's enjoyable when you're at the site but then when you have to unpack and reload the RV, it can be a bit much.
Pro: Awesome destinations
My family, girlfriend, and I stopped at three destinations on our trip. Spruce Run (a nearby park), Ocean City, and Hershey Park. Each of these locations provided some amazing sights to see. All in all, I don't regret going to any of these locations for a second. Each one provided a new layer of the trip. Unlike a normal vacation where you're in one location and have more time to soak it all in road trip vacation forces you to take it all in within a set amount of time. It really makes you take advantage of every opportunity.
Con: RV Camps
Since we were driving a mobile hotel essentially, we couldn't just park anywhere and set up for the night. Well, we could have. We just wouldn't have plumbing or lights. So to that end, we had to stop at various RV Camps on our trip. The area was nice And served as a miniature resort in an of itself but one in particular really stood out to me. When you're in an RV camp surrounded by people of all backgrounds you notice some weird stuff. One guy, in particular, was flying a Confederate flag and always walked around shirtless. One had a handgun placed on top of his BBQ. One always walked around in a winter coat. While the environment is nice the people really can bog it down and make for some hilarious stories.
Pro: Sleeping the RV
It's nice for about 5 minutes.
Con: Sleeping in the RV
While there were nice elements of my sleeping quarters, I had a bit of a Goldilocks situation. Some nights I was too hot, some I was too cold. Some nights I stepped outside in the pouring rain (in my underwear) just to get some air.
Pro: Weather
When the weather was nice it was really awesome. Ocean City, in particular, was consistently sunny, providing us with a wealth of opportunities.
Con: Rain
It rained quite a bit through the trip. When we were in Spruce Run, it was a wash every night. And I'm talking about humid, gross, rain as well.
Pro: Beautiful moments with my girlfriend
Whether it was canoeing at sunset right before another storm or staring at each other beneath the moonlit skies of Ocean City, there were some downright unforgettable moments with her.
Con: I got nothing here
Pro: Time with family
It was good to get to see my family and enjoy time with them since we'd all been working nonstop this summer.
Con: Time with family
Nobody can under your skin like family, am I right?
So there you go. That's all the pros and cons I can think of about my RV adventure. If any of you ever want to try it I'd recommend it. But definitely, don't go on a week it's guaranteed to rain. It doesn't end well.
