This year I thought about living on campus. Even though I live close to my campus, I still thought it would be a good idea to try something new. So here's to everyone who's debating whether or not they want to dorm. Parents, you are more than welcome to read this too, to see what your child will be experiencing on campus.
Pros:
Everything you need is right there, or just a walk away.
Basically when living on campus, anything you need from the library, to computer and the cafeteria are right there. If you want to go out to a club, party, or anywhere else make sure you walk with a buddy or in a group.
You get to meet tons of people.
Living on campus can be a great way to meet new people. Plus, RA's often host activities for each floor as a way to get to know each other.
A new adventure!
When moving in on campus especially in a city or state you're not familiar with it can be quite the adventure.
Easier to focus.
For some people like myself, at home there might be too many distractions for you to get homework done. So living on campus might be easier for you to focus, whether you find a study spot or just stay in your dorm.
Roommate.
You will most likely be assigned a roommate. And you never know, that person can be your new BFF!
Cons:
Some places might be closed on campus.
The cafeteria, computer lab, or library might be closed after a certain time.
You might feel a bit homesick.
When living on campus you might miss your friends, family back home and that's ok. It's important to stay in touch with those back home.
Getting used to being in a new city/state
It may be hard for some people to adjust to being in a new city or state.
Might get distracted.
Some people might get distracted when it comes to doing homework, when living on campus. Whether your floor mates throw a giant party during finals week, or there’s a fire drill at 3 in the morning.
Roommate.
You might not get along with your roommate, or have different interests.
Don’t believe anything I just said, then hear some pros, and cons from students from Medaille College!
“Living on campus has made it possible for me to meet a lot of people and create bonds that wouldn’t have been made being a commuter.”
-Monica LaRock
“Pro: You can get to your classes without having to wait for a bus or a train and not having to deal with traffic.
Con: You're stuck with neighbors that can be pretty rude blasting music at 3am, or drunk students coming back from a party banging on your door.”
-Ashley Linnea Farrell
“Pro: Freedom, and meeting new people from anywhere
Con: The paranoia of the fire alarm going off while you're in the shower.”
