I Promise You, Little

A List of Promises for My Future Little

I Promise You, Little

If Bid Day is like Christmas for sororities, then Big/Little is a giant birthday party. No, seriously, there are presents and all. Big/Little is something that I, as a new member, Big/Little was something that I looked forward to with all of my heart and more - the opportunity to love someone and have them love me through my ups and downs of college and life was so appealing.

I started planning what I would do as a Big from the moment that I became a Little. There’s an unspoken contract between a Big and a Little - a bond that weathers through semi-formal, bad breakups at date nights, and those nights when all you want to do is watch a Nicholas Sparks movie.

I can personally speak for the number of problems that a Nicholas Sparks movie can solve. Actually, Nicholas Sparks movies have taught me a lot about life - his books even moreso, but that’s a conversation for another day. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from my nights spent downing chocolate milk and crying over Noah and Allie is a lesson on the power of promises.

Promises mean a lot to me. They’re golden. Unbreakable. So, in the week before Big/Little and, coincidentally, while watching The Notebook, I decided to put together a list of promises for my future Little - my future best friend.

  1. I promise to love you from the moment I meet you.
  2. I promise that I will always be your Big, even when I am not your favorite person.
  3. I promise that I will help you study during Finals week.
  4. I promise that Starbucks will be a staple in our relationship.
  5. I promise to help you soar through the lows and keep you grounded during the highs.
  6. I promise that I will be there for you like Monica is there for Rachel.
  7. I promise that I will take you to Barberitos at least once a month because Barbs is life.
  8. I promise that no matter what you are going through, I will be there. Through thick and thin, through highs and lows, and through the days when even Nicholas Sparks can’t help make things better…

I promise that I will be there for you.

Words cannot begin to describe how excited I am about taking a Little; it’s not just because I have all of these promises to uphold. It’s because I am ready to show a new member all the ways that my sorority reflects love, confidence, and happiness into my life. It’s because I’m ready to have someone as passionate about being a Kappa Delta as I am. It’s because I’m ready to shower a new member with all the love that I felt pouring out from sisters when I was a new member.

So, for my future Little, I hope that you are ready to throw what you know, dress up in outrageous costumes for socials, and attend as many sisterhood events as possible in one semester. What can I say? I’m a go-getter. And the last promise that I will make you is that you will fall as madly in love with Kappa Delta as I am, and I will be there to catch you when you do.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
