Following the election of Donald Trump to the most powerful office in the world, many people including women, POC and members of the LGBTQ community feel unsafe for what might be next to come.
After the Brexit, many people felt the same way all across Europe. There was fears of endangerment of Muslims seeking refuge. Because of this, many people started wearing safety pins on their person to show their solidarity and stand with the oppressed. This trend is making a come back but this time in the United States.
This trend is to show that you care about the struggles of those who are oppressed and open to supporting them through a time of fear and discrimination.
As we've already seen since election day, Donald Trump has already started to go against many things he once said in his campaign. His view on repealing marriage equality changed as I write this article.
Even though Trump has changed some of the ways he views, there has been a huge reveal of the mindsets of millions of Americans and how truly closed minded a lot of them are.
Whether or not you believe Donald trump has our best interests, it is blatantly obvious that not all Americans are as welcoming to different views. This is why support is needed.
I have decided to wear a safety pin on my clothing everyday. Not only for the solidarity of those around me and the support for them, but to remind myself that I support me. It's easy to forget that, for all of us.
You do not have to be a Trump protester to wear a safety pin. Even if you voted for Donald Trump, there is the possibility that you care about the oppressed people in this nation. So, if you care about the oppressed, please join us in showing your support and solidarity.
