Professors, You Forgot The 'Break' In Spring Break

No, it's fine, I totally wanted to spend my break working on your project, reading a novel and writing two essays.

Sometimes I seriously question whether my college professors were actually ever college students, or if they are just oblivious to the fact take I am taking other classes besides theirs. I have always felt that way, especially when they expect me to dedicate four hours a night to their class — like, let me just add 10 hours to the day in order to allocate four hours per day to each of my classes, sleep the recommended eight hours a night, eat, and attempt to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. It's impossible.

With spring break approaching, my loathsome feelings towards professors and workload have ever increased.

Just the other day, one of my professors assigned a creative project that is due on Easter Sunday and accounts for 30% of my grade. She went on to show us examples and what the expectations were and ended with saying, “I hope this doesn’t take up your entire spring break because spring break should really be about relaxing and taking the week off.” I literally laughed out loud. She completely just contradicted herself by basically saying make sure you relax on spring break, but also make sure you get this project done that accounts for a large portion of your grade. After she said that, all I could think was, "sure, this project is do-able over spring break, but the fact that almost every one of my classes has homework over spring break, so there's no time for relaxation."

One professor says, “just read this novel while relaxing on the beach” and another says “write this paper over spring break because it's due Monday morning when you get back” and then, of course, there is the midterm the day back from break, as well, so I need to study for that.

So, no, professor, I do not have time to relax over spring break because not only do I have your project to do, I have a paper to write, a book to read, and an exam I should’ve started studying for a week ago.

I’m curious about how many other students are also frustrated by this and feeling resentful towards professors for these outrageous spring break workloads. Did these professors not experience this? Did they just manage their time better than me? Or do they find it humorous to assign me all this work since their college spring breaks were ruined by their college professors centuries ago, too?

There needs to be an understanding that it professors allowed my spring break to actually be a break, I would come back to school the following week as a much better student than I will be after a very stressful spring break.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
