Alan Rickman. Professor Severus Snape. The Potions Expert. The Half-Blood Prince. The Anti-Hero.
Anyone who has seen a "Harry Potter" movie knows who Professor Snape is. Anyone who is a fan of "Harry Potter" and has seen every single movie more than once, like I have, loves Professor Snape. For us fans, this past week our love and appreciation for Alan Rickman has grown so much larger. Alan Rickman died on January 14.
Although his acting career is filled many milestones and achievements, his role as Professor Snape was raw, captivating, and downright addicting. To commemorate such an amazing character and person, I made a list of the top five Professor Snape quotes.
5. "That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger. Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all? "
Throughout the saga, Professor Snape was the potions master. He had a natural disdain for Gryffindor which probably stems from the fact that Harry's father bullied him in Hogwarts. Hermione Granger, who was extremely smart and challenged pretty much anyone, was apart of Gryffindor. So, when Hermione continuously spoke out of turn, Snape had a response for her.
4. "You won’t last two seconds if he invades your mind."
Harry and Voldemort were so connected that Voldemort could look into Harry's mind. Snape took on the responsibility of teaching Harry how to stop this invasion. During their private lessons, Harry was failing to succeed at this skill and Snape said another one of his most memorable quotes.
3. "You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? Yes, I'm the half-blood prince."
Harry Potter finds a textbook signed by the half-blood prince, a book of spells that was created by a student at Hogwarts many years before Harry was born. Harry tries to master these spells and incantations. During a face-off with Professor Snape, Harry Potter finds out the shocking truth. In this scene, Professor Severus Snape, dropped his biggest reveal as the half-blood prince.
2. "So when the time comes, the boy must die?"
In the last movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," Snape dies at the hands of Lord Voldemort and gives Harry his tear to drop in the pensieve. Snape's memories then proved to be the most important part of the saga. In fear that the dark lord would come again to kill Harry after he failed to kill him, Dumbledore asked Snape to protect Harry. Dumbledore knew Snape would do this because of his love for Harry's mother, Lily Potter. Snape had been protecting Harry from afar and he grew to care for him. So, when Dumbledore told Snape that at some point Harry Potter must die because he is a horcrux, Snape questions Dumbledore's moral character by saying, "You've been raising him like a pig for slaughter!" This scene reveals Snape's true character.
1. "Always."
Snape's heart only belonged to one woman, Harry's mother. Lily and Snape were friends, but Snape was in love with her. She chose to marry another man and this obviously hurt Snape. Snape's heart experienced a greater sadness when Lord Voldemort killed her. So, after finding out about Harry Potter's fate, Snape releases his patronus, which is the same as Lily's. Dumbledore is shocked by this because it has been so long since Lily's death. He goes on to say to Snape, "After all this time?" Snape responds, "Always." Snape's allegiance and love for Lily will never die.
