College style usually consists of everything comfy: moccasins, leggings, sweatshirts, sneakers, sweatpants, and etc. However, there will come a time when you have an interview, important meeting, presentation, or internship where you have to dress up. It is time to invest in some professional looking clothing sooner rather than later. Realizing you have nothing decent to wear at the last minute while you are stuck at school is a situation you do not want to be in. So, take advantage of the clothing deals that are going on now and start investing in these items:
1. Dress pants
Finding dress pants that do not make you look too old is a challenge. Luckily, there are some slimmer ones out there that are of good quality, will not break the bank, and won't make you look too old (like the ones above, they're the Lexie Pant from Jcrew Factory and you can get great deals there).
2. Close-toed, comfortable shoes
Sandals, sneakers, and moccasins won't cut it in professional life. Nice boots are fine but during the warmer weather, flats are your best bet. If you frequently get blisters from shoes, investing in a high-quality, comfortable pair is critical (like the Cece flats pictured above from Jcrew). Comfortable shoes are extremely important if you'll be on your feet a lot or working with children.
3. Pencil skirts
Pencil skirts are very professional and can still be cute (like the one above from Jcrew). They're an appropriate length and can be worn in all seasons.
4. Skirts in general
If you want some other skirts aside from pencil skirts, then look for ones like the one pictured above (Wool Sidewalk Skirt from Jcrew Factory) that are an appropriate length. Having one with pockets or in a cute color/pattern is a great bonus!
5. Button-down shirts
Button- downs can be boring and look like they're five sizes too big. However, if you find the right ones, (like the one pictured above called Scallop Oxford in Oceana Blue from Kiel James Patrick) they can look really nice. They are very professional and ones with a unique collar, color, buttons, or print can make them much less boring.
6. A nice purse
There comes a time when you realize that your old handbags just don't make the cut anymore. Wristlets and inexpensive bags are great for the weekends and school but they won't last long. Investing in a nice, high-quality bag will tie your professional outfit together and the bag itself will last a long time. A practical but gorgeous bag (like the Cedar Street Maise Shoulder pictured above from Kate Spade) will be the cherry on top of your professional outfit. A nice wallet is a must too! Look out for sales if you really want a designer bag because you can get some great deals!
7. Appropriate shirts and sweaters
You obviously can't only wear button-downs all the time. Shirts like the one pictured above that are short or long sleeved, not see through, and have an appropriate neckline are a wardrobe staple. They are so easy to throw on with a pair of dress pants or a skirt. Nice sweaters also go well with dress pants too!
8. Dresses
Simple dresses that are an appropriate length are excellent and effortless for professional occasions. Wearing a dress makes you look great even though they require little effort. Dresses are easier than putting together a shirt with dress pants or a skirt!
9. Tights
When it gets cold outside, tights allow you to continue to wear your favorite skirts and dresses! They're must-have!
10. Cardigans
Cardigans go well with dress pants and allow you to layer. You can wear your fvorite short sleeve shirts under them even when it gets cold!
