If you really want to sleep on a plane, go for it. However, research shows that sleeping on airplanes can harm your eardrums. That is no bueno. Here are some alternatives to snoozing:

Read a flippin' book

I know books aren't the most exciting thing EVER, but it is possible to find one you absolutely can't put down. Just Google it.

Word search puzzles

The Dollar Store is a lifesaver! Pick up a classic word search book. Before you know it, you will be landing.

UNO!

No one ever gets tired of UNO!

Take pictures

Pay attention to the sky throughout your plane ride. Photos are essential! Especially when the sun rises and sets.

Binge watch some TVshows

Recommendations: "The Good Place," "Girls Incarcerated," "Grey's Anatomy," "Shitt$ Creek," and "American Horror Story."

Listen to some new tunes

Recommendations: Ben Platt, Lana Del Rey, Lizzo, and Paramore.

Adult coloring books

Coloring books are a cheaper form of therapy.

Make bracelets

Friendship bracelets are a go-to time-consuming craft, and they make easy birthday and Christmas gifts.

Drink - if you are the legal drinking age

Whatever floats your boat.

Plan a budget

An absolute necessity for all young adults.

Talk to the people around you

You could be sitting next to a doctor or the next president. You never know unless you ask.

Clean out your photos

I have 13,000 photos on my phone. It is super excessive. My next plane ride will consist of me deleting thousands of photos.

Face masks

Yep. This one is a bit weird. Your face will thank you later.

Snack

The best way to stay occupied.

Start a bucket list

Go skydiving. Meet the Migos. Win a pie eating contest.

Plan your itinerary—if you haven't already

I am assuming your trip is planned, but if not, the plane ride is the perfect time.

Pluck your eyebrows

I am sure the lighting is amazing up there. I wouldn't recommend this if you are next to complete strangers, but it is something to do.

Purchase the wifi

Don't be stingy. Occupy yourself with social media.

Charge your devices

Nothing sucks more than having a dead phone in an unknown place.

Start a journal

Continue writing throughout your entire trip. Reflect on it when you are feeling down. Remind yourself of positive memories.

Write a letter to your future self

Whether it be six months or 10 years from now, this insight will benefit you in the long run.

Hopefully you have learned some new alternative to sleeping for 14 hours on an airplane!

College is filled with many things, and we're so often lectured to make the right decisions as we head out on our own into the college life. But sometimes it's necessary to indulge in some guilty pleasures as well as just doing things because you can. And honestly, a lot of the time it's inevitable. College is no piece of cake that's for sure, so it's okay to do some things you deep down know you shouldn't....once in a while anyways.
