Here's A Year-Long Reading Challenge That Even Procrastinators Could Keep Up With

Was your New Year's resolution to read more? Yeah, mine was too. Recently, I found a note on my phone that listed a book a month that my cousin and I were going to buddy-read together back in 2016. Spoiler: we didn't start in January and we didn't exactly make it all the way through. So, if your goal isn't going quite as planned and you need a little boost, please join me in the Procrastinator Book Club.

1. April: "Listening Valley" by D. E. Stevenson

Status: Read

Rating: 4/5 stars

Review: Loved it! Although it did spark some questions about age gaps in couples.

2. May: "Persuasion" by Jane Austen

Status: Read

Rating 5/5 stars

Review: Love, love, love. But let's be honest, if it's Jane Austen I automatically love it.

3. June: "Daddy-Long-Legs" by Jean Webster

Status: Read

Rating: 5/5 stars

Review: I was not expecting to love this as much as I did but it is now a favorite! Also, there's a Broadway musical about it if you're into that sort of thing.

4. July: "Hourglass" by Myra McEntire

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: I missed this month back then and I still have yet to read it. (However, it sounds fantastic.)

5. August: "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio

Status: Read

Rating: 5/5 stars

Review: Incredibly moving and an absolute must-read.

6. September: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett

Status: Read

Rating: 4/5 stars

Review: Absolutely hilarious and beautifully written as a historically important work.

7. October: "The Little White Horse" by Elizabeth Goudge

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: Honestly, this book is not very high on my TBR (to be read) pile so I'm not sure if I'll ever get to it.

8. November: "Hanging Women" Creek by Louis L'Amor

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: I've loved every Louis L'Amor book I've read so far so this one is still on my TBR.

9. December: "Goose Girl" by Shannon Hale

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: Another one that I never got to and don't think I ever will.

10. January: "Peter Pan" by J. M. Barrie

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: This is one of those "I swear one of these days I'll read it" kind of books.

11. February: "Under The Lilacs" by Louisa May Alcott

Status: Unread

Rating: N/A

Review: Is this still on my list? Yes. Will I ever get to it? Hopefully, but who knows.

12. March: "Arena" by Karen Hancock

Status Unread (big surprise)

Rating: N/A

Review: Honestly, this book was only put on our list because we both owned it and hadn't read it. I must admit that I'll probably be getting rid of this book soon because I actually have no desire to read it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
