5 Ways To Get You Through That Gloomy Midterm Season (Or Any Study Season)

In This Article:

Sometimes, I feel like doing absolutely nothing and will do everything in my power to make sure. I know I have an assignment due the next day or a test to study for, and that I've barely started but that doesn't mean I won't continue to procrastinate. I'll check Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, Instagram, my Email, etc. numerous times, fully knowing there won't be anything new there. I'll text people or watch everything in my YouTube subscription box. I'll stare at them assignment hoping that something will spark in my brain, to get me going, but usually, nothing does.

Forming a study group.

If you can, try getting some people together and form a study group. You can keep each other in check and can bounce ideas and questions off of each other. I took a Japanese class a few years ago, and I would always study with other people for a few hours a day. I was getting all of my work done before I left school for the day, and if I needed help with the assignments, I could always ask them for help.

Studying in different locations.

If you're trying to study at home, try going to a cafe or the library. I like studying in the school cafeteria during lunch and grabbing some food. A few times a week I go to one of the local coffee places on campus and getting some coffee while I study. If I want someplace quite; the school or local library is always a good option, and the library at my school is open until midnight on the weekdays.

Take a break.

Source

After writing a page or reading a chapter, I may take a 5-minute break. During this time, I may watch a short video, or grab a snake or drink, or stretch for a bit. This would also be the time I'd check any social media or text, anyone, back. Sometimes I'll edit photos or do a quick drawing. If you want to take a longer break, going for a walk or to the gym is also a good option.

Listen to music.

Source

Sometimes I'll specifically make a playlist just to work on an assignment, with songs that correlate to what I'm studying. For example; I was studying Japanese, I would listen to Japanese music. I've also gone onto YouTube and looked up some study mixes or a playlist. I also enjoy listening to podcasts

Get it done.

This one might seem obvious, but just forcing myself to do it, also works. I might not be the most attentive the whole time, but just putting my phone down and having a little self-restraint can go a long way. I know that there are apps out there that will lock you out of other apps for a certain amount of time, but I've personally never tried them. Once I start doing the work, I eventually find a groove and get it done.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
