Procrastination The Grade Killer

The why about procrastination, and how to fix it.

We all do it, that little thing called procrastination (Okay, okay, big thing). In college that is something we all deal with, there is a lot going on, and so many different activities that we get involved in, not to mention the classes we are taking. All these things add up, and we begin putting off the work that needs to be done because we procrastinate too much. I know procrastination is something I deal with in my own life...a lot. If we really think about it, though, how harmful can it be to our academic success? Is it really the best idea to leave homework until the day right before it is due? Should we, in all honesty, put off every task, instead of getting it done ahead of time? In all honesty, the best work is done ahead of time for two reasons. First, it gives you more time to complete your work and do any research that accompanies it. Also, it gives you time to go over anything that you have done and make changes or find mistakes that have been made. Grades can (and will) be affected by poorly executed work, because it shows a lack of quality, and nobody wants a bad grade.

Procrastination does have side effects (shocking I know). It can: cause high-stress levels, anxiety, loss of sleep, reduced creativity, agitation, and can affect your social life because you are always going to have whatever task needs to be completed on your mind. It will also affect your quality of life due to increased stress, and anxiety levels.

The best way to avoid procrastination is by getting the task done, as soon as possible. Do not put it off and tell yourself that you will do it later because chances are you will just keep putting it off until the last minute. Doing this results in rushed, and sloppy work, and teachers can tell the difference between work that has taken time to be completed and work that has not. Like the 'Nike' company says "Just Do It", get it done, then it will be out of the way and you can enjoy your free time more without the constant nagging feeling that you still have something that needs to be completed.
Using a planner or calendar to schedule time to complete your tasks/homework is also a big help because it allows you to quickly get an idea of what things you need to get accomplished, and when you plan on accomplishing those tasks, as well as knowing deadlines. It also allows you to see what extra time you have available that you can utilize for studying, task completion, and can also keep you on track.

So next time you start to procrastinate, choose to instead complete whatever task is at hand, and you will find that you will become less stressed. In addition, your grades will most likely improve, and you will feel much better about the work that you hand in.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
