16 Things I Do With My Time When I Should Really Be Writing for Odyssey

Writer's block is the worst. Procrastination is an evil habit. The two combined are a nightmare.

16 Things I Do With My Time When I Should Really Be Writing for Odyssey

I often wake up in the morning dreading having to get out of my bed, but by the time I am off to class or work I begin brainstorming for my next article that I plan to write. I tell myself that when I get home or have free time, I will hop right on my laptop and type away like the creative girl I am deep down. I love writing and the creative outlet it provides me, however, once I get home or find that free time, these are the things you will probably find me doing instead.

Watch Netflix

I tell myself that after watching an episode or two of the latest binge-worthy series I found on Netflix, I will feel reenergized enough to write a whole article. Then I watch 10 episodes and its 3:00 am and I have class in six hours.

Take a nap

After coming home from a long work shift or a day full of classes, the last thing I want to do is stare at an empty draft and fight with my writer's block. Long days are tiring, and I can go for a nap at just about any time of any day.

Scroll through Pinterest

This is one of my favorite things to do and makes me feel extra creative and crafty, and what better place to get inspiration than Pinterest? Nevertheless I always find myself pinning things to different boards only to never go look at those boards again.

Listen to music

Music is also very inspiring, and always puts me in a good mood. Unless I'm in my feels. Then I listen to my sad music. Either way, listening to music is one of my favorite things to do.

Eat junk

Yes, I eat when I am bored. I'm only slightly embarrassed by it.

Do homework

At least that's being productive, right?

Check my text messages

I have come to the point where getting texts feels like getting emails about 95% of the time. I used to cringe when people would have over one hundred unread texts, but now I do the same. Texting feels like it requires so much more effort than it used to.

Check Snapchat

Snapchat and I have a love-hate relationship. I hate that I waste so much time using it, but I just can't resist.

Search GroupMe for article ideas

Having a network of other students on campus to bounce ideas off of can be really helpful. Someone can mention just the perfect headline for you to use and it's off to the races.

Stare at a blank screen which contains nothing other than an article title

Yeah. I spend a lot more time staring at my untouched articles on Odyssey than actually writing articles for Odyssey.

Create a whole new playlist

Music is supposed to be inspiring, remember? Not that I ever came up with an article idea by creating music playlists, but there's a first for everything.

Spend an hour deciding on what I should have for dinner

Making decisions is a lot of work, and choosing the right thing to eat for dinner is very important. Nothing is worse than getting Panera and realizing you were actually in the mood for Chipotle. Except for, maybe, having writer's block.

Think about all of the ways I could reorganize or redecorate my room, but not actually do it

Actually reorganize or redecorate my room, even though I recently did last month when I couldn't think of an article topic

Freak myself out over a muscle spasm and convince myself I am having a heart attack by checking WebMD

You've all done it don't even lie.

Start writing an article, only to stop midway

Not many things worse than starting an article, getting halfway through it, then realizing it's not really going anywhere and giving up on it.
