Today is a sad day in music history: American legend and idol, Prince, has passed away at age 57.
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, on June 7th, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, had to postpone two performances on April 7th, 2016 at the Fox Theatre, in Atlanta because he was getting over the flu. On Thursday, April 21 2016, the singer was found unresponsive in his elevator at his place, Paisley Park. He was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. There has not been a cause of death announced.
Prince touched the world with his music and served as a role model to many people. Well-polished and flamboyant, Prince was an instrumental genius. He played various instruments including the drums, piano/ keyboards and guitars. As a songwriter, he wrote gold and platinum records and even starred in his own movie “Purple Rain.” He was a well-known sex symbol around the world and never changed his music or the way he looked to fit “business needs.”
He had many styles and genres attached to his legendary name. Prince was known for funk, rock, R&B, soul, hip and hip, disco, jazz and pop. He has fans all around the world, both young and old. His music will live on for years to come.
He is best known for his classic hits: Purple Rain, Kiss, 1999, When Doves Cry, Little Red Corvette and Raspberry Beret. Prince has won seven Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), and an Academy Award for best original song.
It has been a sad year for the LGBT community, losing David Bowie, Vanity and now Prince. Prince was a huge role model for men who were proud of dressing in a flamboyant way. He showed the world you can still be a sex symbol without being a macho-man stereotype.
Long Live Prince. You will never be forgotten. Your music will live on forever. R.I.P.
