How To Prevent And Protect Yourself During A Home Invasion

It's easy to think that a home invasion could never happen to you. The scary truth is that it can happen to anyone at anytime. The amount of burglaries that occurred in 2013 was 1,928,465 just for the U.S. and resulted in $4.5 billion in property loss according to the FBI. This statistic averages out to $2,322 per burglary offense. These statistics may seem overwhelming, but the difference that could tip the scale between you and an intruder is how you prepare for and handle an invasion of your home.

Prevention Methods And What To Do

Preventing a home invasion is necessary to remain free of intruders. Many preventative measures are readily available to you and your family just for this purpose.

Security System

A security system could be substantially helpful in preventing a burglary. Many security systems are available for purchase through companies such as ADT and Vivint to name a few. These systems include a keypad to arm and disarm your house alarm system. The alarm system is wired to numerous sensors for each door and window. These sensors activate when the alarm is set and an entrance is opened. The alarm sounds, and the police are called immediately.

Weapons

Weapons, although violent, may be necessary to stopping an intruder from coming into your house. Whether it be a large object, a knife, gun, or bat, you need to know how and when to use it.

Dogs

Dogs can be a great companion, your best friend, and a living security unit. Dogs will not only be able to alert you when someone comes near your home or even breaks into it, but also able to defend your home if trained properly.

Practicing A Home Invasion

Having a plan for when a home invasion occurs is essential. A working plan should focus on the safety of your family and yourself first, and then your property second. If you can, try to leave the house and go to a neighbor. Sleeping with your phone and car keys near your bed is also another measure of protection. This allows you to call 9-1-1 immediately and set off your car alarm as a distraction. If you and your family are unable to leave, designate a spot for your family to hide, such as under beds or in closets. A code word could also be used to signify that it is time to hide in said locations.

Deterrents

Deterrents to prevent an intruder from entering your home could be helpful. Putting security stickers in your windows even if you don't have a security system could deter possible intruders. Another method is to approach a door when someone knocks and yell, "I'll get it!!" to provide the illusion that you are not home alone.

Taking Action

If that moment comes when you and your family are caught in a home invasion, you must take action. The plan you have must be taken into effect. If you decide to face the intruder, make sure you are prepared and do not let fear control you. If you come face-to-face with an intruder and are unprepared, lie down and do not look at them, and pretend to have a heart attack or breathing problem. This will catch the intruder off-guard. If you have a weapon, make sure you are prepared in understanding all of the safety measures and how to properly use it.

Many of these preventative measures as well as tips will aid you and your family in putting your minds at ease, and more importantly it will allow you to remain safe with the most precious things in life unharmed.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
