Its not an unknown fact that we as a society seem to be obsessed with the media and, more specifically, celebrities. We follow them on all our social medias and we watch their reality shows because we are fascinated by them. Now with all the stalking there are bound to be stories that send the rest of us into frenzies. We begin bringing these events up in conversations with our friends and family to hear their opinions and we take to twitter to bash those whose opinions differ from our own. This has become particularly prevalent with instances such as Offset embarrassing Cardi B on stage and the dress fiasco provided by Ed Sheeran and Beyonce.
Now unless you have had no access to social media you have most likely heard that Cardi B has filed for a divorce from husband Offset. She stated that they haven't been seeing eye to eye for a while and she still wants to remain friends but what the internet also knows is the divorce is large in part due to the fact that Offset had previously cheated on Cardi. Now fast forward a few weeks and the news is now focused on Offset who interrupted Cardi's concert with a display of flowers that read "Take Me Back Cardi." Offset then appeared and proclaimed his love for her in front of the entire crowd. The internet has many opinions on this matter, and not surprisingly most of them are split by gender. Most women found this stunt to be embarrassing and selfish while most men are considering it to be heartfelt and endearing. As a woman I know men see us as people who swoon over grand gestures, as if any of us would be so lucky as to have something like that done in our presence. If the roles were reversed and Cardi interrupted Offset with the same display I guarantee words such as "desperate" and "sad' would accompany in the headlines. The fact of the matter is, Cardi made a choice that best benefitted her, only to be upstaged and humiliated by the man she chose to leave.
Another example of the Hollywood double standard stems from another incident that occurred at the 2018 Global Citizens Festival earlier this month. In this case, Ed Sheeran and Beyonce sang their duet "Perfect." The reason this event sparked controversy was while Beyonce emerged in a beautifully over the top magenta gown, Sheeran simply showed up in a basic long sleeve shirt and dark jeans. Again, had the roles been reversed and Beyonce just shown up in jeans and a shirt I believe the internet would question where her effort is. Is she even taking this concert seriously? Why would such a huge female star dress so casually for such a large event is she out of her mind? And so on and so forth. Women are always seems as the ones who need to look put together, hair and makeup done, outfit on point, and ready for anything. I am not saying the way Sheeran dressed was wrong per say, I am just stating that had the roles been switched I believe it would've caused an even bigger "issue."
Its bothersome that simple things take such precedent, especially on the internet. I believe the best way to escape from this petty double standard is to just let everything go. Let women react how they want to react without criticizing their choices in any way, shape, or form. Let women wear what they want when they want without making it seem like she's "letting herself go" if she decided not to wear makeup. If one person is allowed to do it then everyone should be allowed. We are all human beings and we all lead our lives differently, so stop judging them on the way they choose to lead theirs and focus and leading your own.
