Paranoia, skepticism, and presumption have sadly become the basis for how people judge others. Although we won't ever admit to it, we are all extremely critical. We critique everything from others mannerisms to their political views. Some of you may not agree with what I'm about to say but it is time that light be shed on the people who are constantly being looked down upon for being different from you.
After starting college "down South" I met many people who are different than me. Being from New York I haven't been exposed to many people who have thicker accents than me, have a different opinion on gun control than me, and have a different view of the North than me. Instead of being hypercritical of everyone you meet throughout life, take a step back and think.
Just because some people still fly the Confederate flag doesn't make them a racist or a bigot. Just because somebody supports President Trump doesn't mean they're against gay rights, and immigrants. Just because somebody is in favor of safe spaces across college campuses doesn't make them weak or a coward.
Granted, you might not agree with what others have to say, or what they stand for but everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Now, this doesn't mean that you can talk nonsense and claim yourself to be right. As long as you can defend and vouch for what you are saying and not cause harm to others by being intentionally derogatory you are in the clear to speak your mind.
By attending school "down here" I have learned to branch out and broaden my mind. I believe openness throughout life and actively engaging with numerous perspectives can benefit everybody for the long term. Not only does it allow you to give up control on your thoughts, it also enables you to experience change and make yourself vulnerable.
I always like to remind myself that there are seven billion people in this world and each and everyone of them has a different story and a different upbringing than you do. Just because someone or something is just left of center doesn't mean that it is wrong or invalid. We should all take into consideration different viewpoints and try and educate ourselves before we are quick to make assumptions.
"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change". Hopefully one day we can all view the world with this mindset. This mentality could help alter our hypercritical thoughts and allow us to take a moment to recognize and appreciate all the different cultures, opinions, and personalities that are around you. Next time you find yourself in a situation where tensions are high due to a clash in ideals and beliefs, remind yourself of Wayne Dyer's quote and see how it can make a difference in how you view the world.
