Homecoming week. The phrase alone is almost completely daunting. Now, don't get me wrong. Homecoming week can be extremely fun also but as a marching band member, it reminds you of everything that you have to accomplish. That means five total rehearsals (but thankfully, we only have to do four this week. Yay!), working extra hard to make sure our show is clean, and having to perform a pep rally. On game day, we have the added pressure of knowing that many alumni's will be returning to their Alma mater to participate in the homecoming festivities. To know that past members of the Band of Distinction will be sitting in the audience and judging our performance to how their band performed back in the day is scary. You want to make them proud of their Alma Mater and proud to have been a part of a band as great as ours. Yet, you worry that for some odd reason, a disaster will happen and the director of bands (DOB) will hear all of the complaints and eventually, you will hear all of the complaints from the DOB.
Even though I do fear the worst, what makes all the blood, sweat, and tears worth it are when I get back into those bandstands and feel all the excitement everyone has. If you have never felt the surging energy of the band before and after a show, you are missing out. You stand by your fellow peers and look into each other's eyes knowing you all can do this show perfectly. After, you glance at each other through sweat and know that with all of us together, we just did something amazing.
So, with that being said, I am not asking for pity for any of the band members. This is more of just a glance of what we as Band of Distinction members have to go through this next upcoming week. I know homecoming will be great and I can't wait to look at our DOB's face with the look of relief after doing the best show ever for one of the most important days years.
