NetherRealm Studios is back with its newest fighting game starring the DC Comics heroes and villains, Injustice 2. The first game was fun and a perfect gap to fill the missing void of DC fighting games that the Marvel Vs games were able to provide for their heroes. How does this new one fare?
Injustice 2 follows the comic storyline of the same name, featuring Superman becoming a tyrant and taking over the world establishing his world peace following the death of Lois and his unborn child after Joker drugs him. The Justice League is fractured into two sides. Superman's Regime or Batman's Insurgency.
There's a healthy amount of heroes and villains to pick from including the obvious choices such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and wild cards like Firestorm, Captain Cold, Blue Beetle and Cheetah.
Injustice 2 makes a lot of improvements from its predecessor. The Wager system has been reworked into the Clash system. If you're under pressure from your opponent, you can break away and initiate a clash between both fighters and spend your super meter to win and regain health or deal damage depending on who starts it. You can also spend meter to do roll escapes out of the corner or aerial recoveries.
One improvement I'm happy to see are the supermoves actually having some character and thought put into them. My favorite is definitely The Flash's since he carries you across time to eventually smash you into yourself. However, their model work, especially when it comes to the female characters could use some work. It finally looks like someone on the animation team figured out what a woman looks like.
Another thing is gear system which is unfortunately trapped behind a loot box system with terrible RNG system designed to keep you playing for years to get what you want for the characters you play. As a Bane main, it is incredibly painful. Other modes include the Multiverse, similar to Mortal Kombat X's arcade ladders which offer different challenges to fight under. There's also the Guilds which players can join and complete additional challenges and objectives under.
Injustice 2 is a fun romp that offers a slightly more understandable version of Batman vs Superman.
