"Free Fire" has already secured itself among my top films of 2017 and we're almost halfway through the year. I'm practically spending this whole article geeking out about it. It's a fantastically simple film: a gun deal between two parties goes wrong and a shootout ensues.
"Free Fire" has an all-star cast of Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Jack Reyner and much more. Everyone delivered a strong performance and it heightened my enjoyment of the film with everyone's delivery of their lines to be sarcastic assholes. It's the most fun you can have watching idiots shoot at each other for an hour and a half.
My favorite parts of "Free Fire" are the sound design, editing, and camera work. For a huge gunfight, there are some moments of pure silence and when the guns go off, they're deafening and you can feel the gunshot. This really goes well with the editing and camera work in my favorite shot in the whole film, which is of a character aiming a gun and firing but we see their face from the barrel of the gun the entire time and I screamed in the theater alongside my friends. There's another great shot where it pans around the entire location as guns are going off and ANOTHER shot where a character uses a wooden wheel to move around and it cuts to guns firing at the same time and it just speaks to the filmmaking nerd in me.
I highly recommend seeing "Free Fire," it's one of the best films out right now, in my opinion. It's a lot of fun and it's a great example of keeping things simple and making a great finished product.
