The Presidential Election And Protests

We cannot be divided if we wish to keep standing as one.

We woke up on the morning of November 9th to see the news of who had been elected. I didn't even have to turn on my TV to see who it was. As soon as I opened social media, all that was on there was the news of who had won. People arguing for and people arguing against the new president. Donald J. Trump will be our president for the next four years. On Friday, January 20, Donald Trump will be inaugurated into the White House. Whether you agree or disagree, we will have a new president of the United States.

I have seen endless tweets and Facebook posts about how we "let our country down" and how we "elected someone who knows nothing". All of this is coming from Hillary supporters, which is understandable. What do you think the Trump supporters would be doing if Hillary had won? They'd be saying how we "let our country down" and so on. No matter what the outcome, there would have been groups of people who disagreed and were upset with the election. Still, though, why complain? If you went out and made your voice heard, you have no reason to complain. You voted, but so did others. It isn't just your opinion that matters, and that goes for both sides of this.

We really need to get over the saying "he's not my president." For some reason, people decided that was a good thing to start. If you believe he isn't your president, you shouldn't be living here. He is the president of the United States and if you live in the US, he is your president. You cannot just choose to not have a president. He will do what he believes is best for this country just like Hillary would've done if elected.

Some people also seem to think that he has the absolute right to take away the basic civil rights that we all have. I have seen countless posts about how women will lose all rights and minorities will lose all rights. The president does not have the exclusive right to just take away your basic rights. That is not how the political system works at all. The president MUST get approval on decisions. So no, women and minorities will not lose their rights and whoever started that idea should read up on how decisions are made.

We cannot be a nation divided just because of this election. We cannot go around protesting this and turn to rioting, we have seen enough of that in the past. As Abraham Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand". He is right about that, we have to accept the decision of the election and if you don't agree with it, well you have to deal with it for four years. This is a democracy where your voice can be heard. But do not make your voice heard through riots and protests, that will get nothing. We all need to be together and cannot be divided because of this. I'm sorry if the election did not go your way, but it can't be changed now.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
