...I'm fighting for its immediate removal.
Not solely the removal of the physical wall between the United States and Mexico, but also the wall of laws put forth in order to prevent refugees from entering. I will protest the fact that our leader refuses to accept that there are incredible people in Mexico, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and other troubled countries across the world dreaming of a new life in America--who deserve a new life. In that case, I refuse to accept a wall.
I will accept and understand that tax dollars are being put towards programs assisting the poor. I will support that tax dollars are expediting the immigration process. I will acknowledge tax dollars that will benefit the education system: education is the foundation of a successful society. I will gladly realize that tax dollars are used to simply continue the governance of the United States. However, I will protest the fact that I am directly paying for the creation of a barricade between the United States and the rest of the world. A wall between Mexico and the United States, for instance, would only force millions of hopeful immigrants to continue to live in the shadows, with the prospect of the American Dream so close to their fingertips, yet still untouchable.
In more recent times, however, my protests must become more immediate. It is not just a physical wall that I am protesting, but it is also the laws that have been implemented so quickly. Now, I refuse to accept the fact that President Trump is isolating seven countries, slamming the door to our country in their faces. I will protest that immigrants must be afraid to go home, or worry if their families will ever be able to join them. I will shed tears with those who must hear that their loved ones have been denied entrance due to the fact that they happen to be born in one of the seven countries President Trump has decided to discriminate against.
People from countries President Trump has publicly shamed and refused admittance have had an immense impact on the good of the world, and an isolationist society is not the kind of country his people want. A president has incredible, terrifying power--the power to enact life-changing laws, establish or ruin relationships with other countries. They have the power to shape our country for not only the length of their term, but beyond. In the case of immigration, there are millions of possibilities, lives, families, futures that are suddenly shattered through the travel ban.
The travel ban has been in place for less than a week, yet the ban is intended to last three months. Just imagine the changes that can happen both in the United States and overseas in 90 days. Just imagine...
