I’m writing this on November 9, 2016. A day that will go down in American history as a very dark day indeed. Donald Trump has been elected to be President of The United States of America. Donald Trump. President. Donald Trump is President. Saying it over and over again does not make it make any more sense. It baffles me that this actually happened. America actually elected this pathetic, disgusting excuse for a man as their president. It actually happened, and now the world has to deal with the consequences for the next four years.
Sadly, I am not shocked. After going through Brexit in June, I am not shocked that the masses voted for such an idiotic, detrimental decision. I’m not shocked. I really wish I could have woken up this morning to be shocked at the result, but I was not. And that upsets me more than anything. To expect an entire nation to vote for this vile man, to vote for an openly misogynistic, racist, homophobic and generally intolerant and horrific man, is a sad, sad feeling. It breaks my heart to know that millions of people agree with the backward, closed-minded views of this scum.
As I’m not American, you might wonder why I’m so bothered. Not only will Trump as President affect international politics, but it is what this represents that upsets me so much. A country that has only recently legalized same-sex marriage has now elected an imbecile who will appoint an equally narrow-minded, republican judge in the Supreme Court. A country with such a deep and important history of fighting for LGBTQ rights has elected an openly homophobic president, who could indeed make gay marriage illegal again. This decision is disastrous for the LGBTQ community and that breaks my heart. The amazing progress that has been made in the past years could soon be wiped away, and that breaks my heart.
America has elected a man who is a loud, proud misogynist. A man who has been found guilty of sexually harassing women, with victims in the double figures. A man who has called women pigs, disgusting, slobs. A man who harshly criticizes women’s appearances, and has diminished women’s success by crediting their looks. A man who said he would date his daughter, if she weren’t his daughter. A man who wants to punish women who have abortions. A man who will go on trial for the rape of a thirteen year old next month. And America decided to make him one of the most powerful men in the world.
One of America’s greatest qualities is its diversity. It began as a country made up of people from all over the world, from different backgrounds, religions and cultures. Many of the first settlers came to America in order to escape religious prosecution. This rich history is being regressed into racism, xenophobia and pure intolerance. America has elected a man who has called all muslims terrorists, and all Mexicans rapists. This man is openly racist, and America has elected him as their president. They chose him as the man to represent their country. As the man to represent them. And I’m so afraid that he does.
What does it say about a country that elects an inexperienced, lying, intolerant and simply despicable man over a woman with years and years worth of experience? What does that say? This creature can get away with sexually abusing women, being openly racist and homophobic, arguing with no coherent logic or structure, loses his temper, shouts abuse at his opponent, and can become elected as president. And people don’t like Hilary because of some emails? What does this say about America?
This is a dark time. Donald Trump now has a dangerous amount of power, and I am truly scared. Some people argue that he won’t be making most of the decisions, and that a lot of what he has promised won’t come true. But I’m not so sure. The vice president, Mike Pence, is just as bad. He is a man who signed an anti-abortion law, a man who defunded Planned Parenthood, leading to an outbreak of HIV, a man who signed a bill legalizing homophobic discrimination, a man who voted against an act that calls for equal pay among genders. This is the man who is supporting your president.
It’s a sad day for not only America, but for the entire world. Donald Trump becoming President represents regression. What makes this situation even more distressing is that if only Millennials had voted, Clinton would have won. The younger generation wants progression. Instead, old, rich, white men are shaping our future, and are deciding the ways in which we can live our lives. Our generation is fighting for progress, only to be knocked back by hateful, loathsome people like Trump. However, sadly, Trump is not the only one to blame. We have to blame the fifty percent of America that agrees with him.
That’s another scary thought. Fifty percent of America either agrees with Donald Trump, or are too ignorant to truly understand what they just voted for. Whatever their twisted reason, we all have to deal with the consequences now. Hopefully, this will just act as a catalyst for our generation to work even harder at fighting the oppression we will now suffer. Hopefully, it will unite us against Trump, and we can work against his intolerance and hate. Hopefully, this is not the worst decision America has ever made.
