Saturday night was the annual White House Correspondent’s Dinner (WHCD), also known as the Nerd Prom. Ever year, the White House Correspondent’s Association hosts a dinner where journalists, celebrities, and politicians get to rub shoulders and, well, eat dinner. But the most notable part of the evening is when the President gets to give a joke-filled speech aimed at the media, fellow politicians, and himself. Followed by a roast-type speech given by a famous comedian, this year it was "Nightly Show" host Larry Wilmore. This year was extra special because it was President Obama’s last dinner, and everyone knows he’s been getting funnier as his term comes to an end. So, here are the funniest moments from President Obama’s last (*tears*) Nerd Prom.
1. The Montage
This came before the President spoke. It started out as a sweet, heartfelt montage of the President’s best moments from the past eight years. Quickly, it turned into a gag reel for these same eight years. It included everything from the President falling to calling reporters by the wrong name, and even pointed out his overuse of the phrase, “Let me be clear.”
2. On CPT
The President opened up his speech by apologizing for being late by saying, “I was running on CPT, which stands for jokes that white people should not make.” This is a reference to a recent Hillary Clinton gaffe where she tried to make a joke about CPT, or “colored people time.”
3. On Justin Trudeau
Everyone knows that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is one of the best politicians right now. Even Obama knows this. In his joke, he speaks about how someone recently told him that Trudeau is new, fresher, and more modern, to which the President responded, “Give it a rest, Justin.”
4. On High Approval Rating
Obama spoke about how high his approval rating is now that he’s leaving office, saying that the “last time I was this high, I was trying to decide on my major.”
5. On Kendall Jenner
The President referenced his encounter with one of the youngest Kardashian/Jenner sisters, saying, “I’m not exactly sure what she does, but I’ve been told my Twitter mentions are about to go through the roof.”
6. On Bernie Sanders
Senator Sanders was actually one of the guests at the WHCD, and President Obama commented on his appearance by telling him, “You look like a million bucks, or, to put it in terms you understand, you look like 37,000 donations of $27 each.”
7. On Hillary Clinton
In a moment that had me yelling “true,” the President perfectly summed up Hillary Clinton’s campaign: “Hillary trying to appeal to young voters is like your relative who just signed up for Facebook.”
8. On Donald Trump
After faking that he was done with his speech, the President turned back and assured the audience that he was going to talk about Donald Trump, and he had a lot to say. First, he noted Trump’s non-attendance, asking, “Is this dinner to tacky for ‘The Donald’?” Then, he commented that Trump would be good for closing Guantanamo because “Donald knows a thing or two about running waterfront properties into the ground.” He ended his spiel on Trump by telling the journalists in the room, “I hope you’re all proud of yourselves.”
9. Couch Commander
In a final video, Obama pondered what his life is going to be like after he leaves office and spends the next two years in DC. In the video, he is shown asking Vice President Joe Biden what he’s going to do next, calling a baseball coach to ask if the team needs any help, and trying to get his license at the DMV, only to have the clerk comment on his middle name, “Hussain,” and ask if his birth certificate is real. The clip ends with the President spending time with former House Speaker John Boehner, who is giving him advice on life outside of the presidency. Boehner also gives him some advice we can all stand to hear: "Just be you for a while.”
We’ll miss you, POTUS.
