Prepping For The 13.1

Getting ready to run a half marathon

Prepping For The 13.1
Zion Half Marathon

In less than two months I will be running my first half marathon. Ever. Now, I like to run, but I have never really wanted to run further than, let's say 3 miles in an outing. Past that and it was too far. I didn’t see a point in it, and I honestly was never up for seeing what exactly was my limit. I did though for a reason I still don’t know why I put running a half marathon on my bucket list. Once its there and I have an opportunity to cross something off said bucket list I jump at it feet first. I was presented with an opportunity to run one in April, and I said sure why not.

Now, I am going to be honest. I haven’t trained as much as I would have liked to for the race. School and other commitments have arisen that kind of prevented me from having the long stretches of time needed to cover those distances. I am not a fast runner, so it kind of takes me awhile to lock down the mileage. But, I was able to stay in shape through martial arts, and other programs that I was able to take advantage of that fit into my super busy schedule. But, now it is crunch time.

Starting this past Friday I have been making a concerted effort to be more diligent about the miles I need to put in to be ready to tackle the race that is in Utah. It is crazy that I have been discussing it with my friends the past year, but now it's coming real close, and I have to follow through. I am excited about the challenge, but it is going to be really difficult, and I will probably lose feeling in my calves halfway through the race. But, I just want to finish it. That is the goal.

Before my race, though, I decided to run a 10k with my Greek advisor at my university a few weeks before the actual half marathon. Am I ready for it? Maybe, but it is going to be a long, grueling six and a half miles and I hope to finish it under an hour. That is the goal, but depending on the number of hills determines my will to get it to that point. So, as the day's march on so will I on the pavement around Shreveport. I will have to run through the heat, the cold, the wind, and the rain to make sure that in April I will cross that finish line.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
